welding in SFC...remove interior?

so guys, did you have to remove any of the floor padding or rug to have your SFC welded in? i've read the "horror stories" of the shops almost setting a fire due to problems w/ the fuel lines, but i'm more interestd in problems with melting the interior rug.

i would think as long as they do short welds, say 1" at a time and let the metal cool a bit betweeen welds, it should be alright.
thanks for any input

Just be careful and you'll be fine. We didn't have to remove anything in the interior. I wrapped the fuel lines with Zetex and pushed them up while welding. It worked perfectly.

If they weld in one spot for "too long" it may start a fire/burn the rug, mine turned out fine with the carpet and everything in place.

I removed the interior... mostly just for the experience and because it was required by the place the welded them. I don't think there are many if any true horror stories about flaming interiors. Although if there are I would like to see/hear them.

I had a guy do mine @ a local speed shop , and had no problem with the interior in place ..... he did take the time to disconnect / move the fuel line out of the way.

This was one of the reasons given to me why my local muffler shop refuses to weld in my SFCs. They said they know of a car that did catch fire.

They want me to remove my carpeting.

I'm just gonna get a friend to do it and he will be careful.

No you don't need to have your interior removed as long as the person doing the welding knows what they're doing.

Had mine welded in with interior in. No problems here either, and the guy did an awesome job.

Angry

I am the guy who had his car caught on fire! It sucked big time! It wasn't the interior that caught fire, it was the fuel lines! The guy welding my driver side didn't do anything to shield the fuel lines while he was welding. Well one little zap and it burnt through that cheap plastic fuel line and the car went up into flames on that side! It was one of the worst days I can remember! And before someone says, that is what you get for bringing it to some hillbilly shop, I brought it to one of the most respected f-body shops that sponsors this site and I am sure many of you have bought quite a few things off of them. The reason I will not say the name of the shop is because I have HUGE respect for the owner of this business and it was an accident, even if it was a little careless. But, the car suffered paint damage to the hood, fender (replaced because it melted at the bottom), driver side door, and rocker panel. The fire department was able to get the fire out in time so it did not damage any interior at all and did not ruin any suspension. I have pictures of the car after we cleaned some black soot off of it if someone can host them. Word of advice, whoever installs your subframe connectors make sure those fuel lines are wrapped and protected good!

Just take some wet towel and stuff them under the carpet where your gonna weld. Its a lot safer.

The shop I took it to is used to working on mostly LS1 cars. They just did a SFC install on a LS1 car before mine. I don't know if you are familiar with an LS1, but their fuel lines run along the driveshaft tunnel and nowhere near the frame support as in our LT1's. The guy welding just wasn't paying attention. And as for you saying the shop is not a highly respected one, if only you knew who it is was it would surprise the sh*t out of you! Trust me, I drove a good distance to go to this shop because they are very well trusted with some of the fastest f-body's in the midwest and I was surprised to see my car on fire!
