Welding onto an oil pan

Is it safe to weld onto an empty oil pan while its on the car? Empty as in, has oil residue inside the pan... This may be a stupid question, im not sure.

Yeah...not a good idea.

Take the time to pull the two engine mount bolts out and lift the engine up so you can unbolt the pan and remove it.

Is oil combustable? Ive never really though of oil as a highly flammable substance but who knows what it could do in a confined area...

You know how people mix oil and gas together to make Molotov cocktails?

Yeah.

I would say don't try but if you do make sure you take pics of the aftermath for us.

I don't think it would be worth the risk of doing it with the pan on. It is the vapors that become explosive.

Now, if you were like this guy, it probably would not bother you.

Maybe he's looking to weld a bung for a sensor or something. That's what I was going to do but since looking at this I just may reconsider.

I dropped the pan enough that its pretty well ventilated, I would expect for a small fire to start, but nothing major that I couldnt blow out, any ideas?

I assume you drained the oil. Cram a big wet towel in there.

Good idea, im just going to punch a hole, weld a nut on then use a NPT fitting to screw into the hole. Should be pretty simple to weld too... If I stop posting after tommorow check the news.
