weird noise
weird noise
I have this weird noise coming from my front driver side wheel well. It's like a loud clicking.I've looked and can see no signs of anything touching together(scrape marks or anything). Also it only happens when I turn left.Any idea what this might be???Thanks guys.
ideas
More info re symptoms might be helpful.
Does the clicking vary frequency with speed, one would assume so? Have u done a detailed inspection of the tire for object embedded in inside shoulder of tire? Are u running stock wheels & tires or aftermarket/oversize? Stock brake rotors or slotted/drilled? Any wheel bearing play with wheel off ground? What was the last things u did to car before noise appeared? Any unusual events right before noise occurred, i.e. pothole encounter, bad suspension hit of any kind?
If u havent already, jack the wheel up, under the lower A arm, to keep the suspensiopn loaded like on ground, just enough to break tire contact with ground, put steering in full left & spin the wheel/tire assy. Does that duplicate the noise or no?
good luck!

I'll make sure to do all of what you suggested, the only thing I did before it happened had nothing to do with the steering or suspension at all.As for the wheels, they are Torque Thrust II's with 275/40/ZR17's that I have been running for a couple of years now.The rotors and brakes are all stock.Nothing stuck on the inside of the wheel or tire anywhere. And the noise does not vary with speed. It only does this at low speeds when turning sharply left.
sure could be something rubbing, like a bracket or brake line on the rotor or rim. Let us know what u find when you jack it up & spin the wheel. Pretty much anything that makes a noise loud enough to hear while driving is gonna leave some kinda mark somewhere.
But you say frequency of noise (how many clicks per second) doesnt vary with speed? Is that because it basically only occurs at one speed, i.e. very slow? I wonder if this could be related to hydraulic pump/power steering? Try running the engine & go full lock left, both with the wheel on the ground & with that wheel jacked under the lower A arm, just enough to clear the tire, but with the wheel assy not rotating. If you get a clicking sound in either of those cases, that's probably a hydraulic power steering by-pass/return valve clicking. That's a fairly common/normal noise = nothing to worry about....If you do find it's related to power steering, check power steering fluid level, low fluid makes the system make strange noises, especially at full lock.
good hunting!
cheers,
Ian
