weird grinding/growling noise from trans

I recently had my T56 rebuilt in my 94 Z28 along with a Spec stage 2 clutch installed. Now at different times I am getting a very odd grinding/growling sound coming from transmission. Happens sometimes on downshifts and sometimes on inclines. Whats really strange is it does not do it all the time. Any ideas?

Surely someone has an idea........or maybe this board is just so active it was pushed to page 3 before anyone who might know could see it.

Does it sound like a crunchy sound? I had a similar experience which turned out to either be my exhaust or torque arm.

My local exhaust shop installed my cutout and fixed a few minor problems with my exhaust. They also discovered that my torque arm was partly cracked near the rear and that some of the bolts had come loose that hold the torque arm to the rear. After tightening everything up and welding the crack in the torque arm together the crunchy noise went away.

mine does the same thing...........usually after a long period of highway driving.............when trying to downshift, or when coasting in gear with no throttle.

ive posted twice about it with no satisfactory reason...........just people say they have the same problem, but seems to run fine.

ive put about 18k on my tranny in less than a year, and it hasnt exploded (yet), so i dont think its too bad of a thing, just more of an annoyance.

More of a growling sound......even does it somewith clutch engaged and just coasting. I will be calling MMT tomorrow to see if they have a clue but thought I might find out something here first. About 2 days after I got the car back I did have a bolt come out of the torque arm on the transmission end. I definitely know what a torque arm sounds like hitting the floor now lol.

Well to be honest last night was first time I had really noticed it after a long trip back from Shreveport (180 miles one way I guess)

It was doing it all day today when I drove it around some. Scared to drive it too much cause it sounds very bad. Like I said I will hopefully find out something from Sean @ MMT tomorrow about what could cause it.

Thanks
Brad

mine does it really bad for a day or two (randomly)............then it will be fine for a month or more.........then do it again.

how old is the tranny fluid? i changed mine and it took longer for the noise to come back.

Well i don't know exaclty what noise your talking about but mine makes a bunch of them. Some of them go away when you press in the clutch. I noticed today that if i'm coasting in first just barley giving it gas it sort of makes a whining noise or something like that. I think it is a new noise but maybe i just didn't notice it before. But this is only the 2nd week that i have actually been able to drive the car. If the torque arm is loose would that make the tranny shake while turning?

I need the guy who was on Police Academy to come listen to it and translate the sound to you guys I guess. I am terrible at describing sounds (like most of us are )

Well I talked to Sean from MMT today and he seems to think its the throwout bearing making the racket. I will know Monday I guess. Thanks for the replies everyone.

could be............the stock throwout bearing makes a rattling noise when slipping the clutch into first on almost ALL lt1 m6's...........the corvette throwout bearing will fix that......do a search for more info.

well heres an update. Had the guy go back in and check everything and whatever he did stopped the noise but upon getting back in the car I now no longer have a speedometer if I accelerate much at all until i tap the brakes. He says he must have left a clip off the gear in the tailshaft and is supposed to fix that . Upon driving the car today though the same growling noise started again.

This is getting very frustrating and I am thinking of just buying a t56 from a wrecked car to put in it and keep it presentable long enough to sell it. I doubt one would want to buy a car making all these noises.

Try the new throw out bearing first. Mine does the same as a few of the others in this thread. I plan on fixing it when I get a new clutch but for now it works fine so I put up with it.

The throwout bearing in it now is the 3rd one since I had it rebuilt. Is it possible I could have gotten 3 bad ones in a row like that? The growling noise is so intense you can feel it. Definitely sounds like a shaft rubbing or something. I had never seen any bad feedback on the guy who did the rebuild but I am beginning to wonder why he is having so much trouble with this one.
