Weird alarm/electrical/starting problem
Weird alarm/electrical/starting problem
I'll start out by saying I'm a complete jackass when it comes to electrical stuff and couldn't find the answer to my question through a search
Here goes.
The alarm my car came with when I bought it used has always been way too sensitive and prone to false alarms. One day while I was working underneath the car, it starting going off. So in my pissed off state, since I planned on killing the siren/horn someday anyway, I chose to cut the wire going to the horn instead of crawling out from under the car, running in the house, and turning it off
Since then, the only way I can get the car to start is to hit the alarm bypass switch (that was installed with the alarm) while twisting the key to the starting position. I've tried the obvious, like hooking the siren back up and hitting the disarm button on the key fob, and it does the same thing. In fact, I can leave the battery disconnected for months, hook it back it, and it still does the same thing. Any idea

Re: Weird alarm/electrical/starting problem
Does the alarm do anything when you hit the buttons on the key fob? Most likely you have reset the alarm, and there is a special sequence that you have to do to be able to resync the key fob with the alarm. I know on my old Camaro I had a Code Alarm system, and you would have to resync it by turning the dome light on and off three times while holding the disarm button on the remote. It has been a while since I have done that, since I haven't had the car for almost 4 years, so I am not sure if that sequence is correct. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if every alarm system was different. Did you have the alarm installed by someone or did it come with the car? You might try contacting a local car alarm dealer for some assistance--specifically a dealer of the alarm that you have would be best.
Hope that helps.

Re: Weird alarm/electrical/starting problem
Mine's also a Code alarm, so that's good to hear. The previous owner of the car had it installed, so I'm not sure how to contact the alarm dealer that installed it.
At any rate, your input is very helpful since I know it's more of an alarm issue than something that's wrong with the car's electrical or VATS.
Thanks!
