waterpump weephole...

i was wondering where about the weephole is located on the waterpump cause i have a coolant leak and was wondering if thats where it was coming from, on the bottom of the water pump theres a spot that looks to have silcone on it and i was wondering if someone had tried filling it to stop the leak and was wondering if you have to replace the waterpump of if you could jb weld it....

Re: waterpump weephole...

it's directly on the bottom of the water pump body.. there should be no silicone on the pump there.. if someone covered it up sounds like they were trying to stop the leak.

If that's the case, the pump is bad. The idea of the weep hole is to let you know of immiment complete failure of the pump bearings. It's there for a reason.

My friend gave me a good analogy.. plugging the weep hole is like like plugging your **** shut when you have to take a dump as a fix

Re: waterpump weephole...

The weep hole is on the bottom, center of the water pump. It does sound like someone tried to seal yours. Sealing it doesn't fix the problem as in the weep hole gives you early warning the pump is failing.

Remove serpentine belt to get it out of the way, drain the radiator, cover the opti, some catchpants, 9/16" socket (a swivel would help for the one behind the p/s pump, but it's not necessary).. Remove 6 bolts, clean surface, put on gasket, replace pump. If I recall there's enough room to do it w/o taking the fans off, but if you run into space issues, those come off real easy as well.

It isn't very difficult. The worst part (for me) was getting the old gasket crap off the block.

Just curious, but has anybody ever had leakage through the weephole after converting to an electric water pump? I was toying with the idea of welding mine shut, (doing the conversion), but if it'll never be a problem then I won't bother.

Re: waterpump weephole...

In essence the weep hole area is sealed off once you plug the back of the WP after removing the bearing/drive assembly.

No, because the plug you put in to seal the hole from the old drive shaft covers the weep hole...

That's not the weep hole. The weep hole is directly at the bottom of the pump. About large enough to stick the sharpened end of a pencil into...

Re: waterpump weephole...

I did! I put in the freeze plug properly got everything all built up after the cam swap, fired it up and it was dripping coolant pretty quickly from that damn weephole. I popped a rivet into it from the bottom which slowed it down a lot and put some superglue over it for a temporary fix, then I had to take the EWP off again and JB weld around the freeze plug for a permanent fix. F***in' weephole!

Re: waterpump weephole...

here is a pick of the inside of the housing, you can see the weep hole "tube" inside the bearing hole.. when that hole is plugged it plugs the weep hole too...

Here it is plugged

Did you install the plug from the inside or the outside of the housing?
