waterpump project. help

94 z28 - removed my factory oil cooler. the metal elbow where the rubber cooler line went onto the water pump is lose and leaks. so i pulled it out and want to just plug up the water pump where the metal elbow went. i have found a plug, but its a pipe thread plug... (home depot) which finding a tap has been no luck so far. what has anyone else used to plug up the whole? where did you find the plugs at?

Re: waterpump project. help

What size plug is it? you should be able to find pipe thread taps at good hardware stores, including old mom andd pop type ones

I am pretty sure the pump for a caprice doesn't have the tube for the cooler

Yeah, it's not what you would think. Heat from the oil is exchanged via the coolant.

OK so how are you plugging the hole in the radiator?
Why not use the bypass hose that all 94's[and others] that have no oil cooler have? GM p/n 10197675.. easiest way to do it..

Re: waterpump project. help

i need to explain more installed s-trim blower and the line from the water pum pto the cooler- metal elbow that the hose connects too. they tell you to move it so that it points out of the way of the blower. of course when you mess with something like a pressed fitting and whe nthe car doesn't get used alot things leak. so the fitting eventually blow off with boost psi. so took off the cooler and have no way to keep the metal tube from leaking. i tried jb weld but pulled it back off was to scared of having the car overheat from it blowing off again. bought a pipe thread plug- only thing i could find that is the right size.. but having a hard time finding the tap for it...

Re: waterpump project. help

where do you live?
try older hardware stores(not ACO type ones), ask for a 1/2" pipe tap
thats where I got mine (I have a 3/8" and a 1/2")

Re: waterpump project. help

Here's a pic off shoebox' site that shows the Corvette[or Impala] pump that does not have the bypass hose fitting..
Also, a NPT[1/2" or other] tap shouldn't be hard to find at all?
Hard to believe they tell you to twist a swaged in fitting.. good recipe for disaster!..

Re: waterpump project. help

I had those holes welded shut. Anyone who can weld aluminum can do this in abour 3 minutes.

Re: waterpump project. help

only thing bout having that done i would have to remove it from the car and i don't want to do that.

no one on here has any clue what i could put onto the metal elbow, some type of sealer type stuff and shove it back into the water pump and once it dried it would be strong enough to hold the elbow tight and also prevent any leaks??? then i would buy the GM bypass hose and route it to the radiator.
