Waterpump driveshaft seal install???
Waterpump driveshaft seal install???
Tried to install with the cover in place already and it ripped even though we put some cam lube on it. My question is how is it not easier to install the seal in the cover first and then press the cover over the waterpump driveshaft? Possibly using the cover bolts to pull it on slowly and evenly? I have got another seal but I would rather not rip this one up. Thanks for any help/advice/etc.

I had the same issue as you and I installed the seal with the timing cover on. I didn't install it dry. I just made sure the rubber cleared and it just tapped right on.. the second try.
Re: Waterpump driveshaft seal install???
Hate to bring you the bad news, but that seal ripped out for a reason. Trust me, I had the same problem for nearly a year (I replaced the seal 3 times in that period), only to discover that the waterpump gear drive itself was to blame. Ended up the bearing on it was worn enough to allow some play in the shaft, causing the seal to rip...I'm not saying that this is your problem, but if your seal starts leaking again in the next 3-6 months, you'll at least know what you're gonna need to replace.
Re: Waterpump driveshaft seal install???
Basically, you have to keep the edge of the new seal from catching on the front of the sealing surface of the drive gear. That's what tears it.
Either stretch out the inner part of the new seal a little or slide it onto a socket that is the same diameter of the drive sealing surface. Some people use the water pump coupler (if it is clean). Butt that against the drive and slide the seal onto it.
You can also put some thin plastic on the inside of the seal to protect it during install, then pull it out after the seal is by the front edge of the drive.
This has been talked about many times. You might find more or better description with a search.

Ripped only on the reinstall, was not ripped before. New waterpump driveshaft and gear.

Re: Waterpump driveshaft seal install???
Just a Shoebox stated, common install issue. I believe if you buy the gasket from GM, it contains a funnel shaped plastic cone to aid installation; oil it up too.
Re: Waterpump driveshaft seal install???
Well tried to install it with the cover on and got the same result even though I went real slow and all. Tried it again by installing in the cover first and then using the timing cover to pull it on slowly and that seemed to work. Did not see any noticable rips or anything so will have to start it up soon to tell if all is good. Has anyone ever tried to install it this way? Thanks.
