WaterPump Drive-shaft
Which direction should the end of the shaft with the line in it (groove that goes completely around the end) face? Im pretty sure its towards the engine..and the smoother side without the line faces forward..toward the WaterPump..
I just installed a new Waterpump..and for some reason I found OIL dripping all over my timing cover, waterpump and Opti
I noticed there was an excess of oil/greese all over both ends of the WP drive-shaft, so I pulled everything out of the engine to locate the exact spot of the leak...and it is infact from the Waterpump drive-shaft.
I wiped the entire engine bay off where the leak was..opened up the Opti and dried what was moist/dirty, and wiped off the WP. Its where the gear spins in the WP. My old one did not leak from this driveshaft(it was leakin coolant from the weephole though..thats why I replaced it).
What would cause this greese/oil to build up near the drive-shaft? I figured it might have been due to the fact that the drive-shaft was installed backwards..but it fits the same either way. Anyone ever experience this before either?
I can say that..when I installed my new Waterpump...I accidentally installed it, put everything on the car..started it up and the car got very hot. Then I pulled into the garage..and noticed this little cylindrical thing sitting on my tool chest
...So I then uninstalled EVERYTHING and put the drive-shaft back on the WP. Maybe this somehow did some damage? Cant imagine how though..Any help at all would be appreciated...I dont want to install it all and have it leak greese/oil again if I can fix it or maybe the seal is bad on the Waterpump where the spindal is...and get a new one from my warrenty from the auto store..? Thanks guys!

Re: WaterPump Drive-shaft
if u didnt have the shaft on at all then u werent pushing any coolant around :P so its not like u damaged teh wp , and as long as it wasnt running for awhile im sure ur block, heads, and etc are fine as well. I never took out that driveshaft, but i know the side that sticks out looks exactly like the gear on the back of the wp, and then u use a coupler two link them together so they spin spin away
And im sure theres a seal around the whole gadget, mebbe its a part that can be replaced so it does not leak

Re: WaterPump Drive-shaft
..yeah there is a cylindrical shaft that connects the two gears..this is the only way the WP can actually spin the turbine inside. Im saying..One end of the WP drive-shaft has a groove all the way around it..the other end is flat/smooth. Im 99.9%/EPT sure (lol
)that the grooved end goes towards the engine..But..Im curious if there is a gasket or seal that is on the timing cover..that maybe is leaking...There was a build-up of both greese and oil so it would seem the timing cover is leaking (would be the cause of oil)..and the greese is coming out (from the WP
)...-so..ive got greese built up around the WP gear and seal...
-and ive got grease/oil built up around the timing cover gear (which leaked all over the engine including the Opti
(when i say gears..i mean the two protruding teethed shafts..just like the Opti spart shaft..infact almost identical).
my question is..has anyone experienced a leaking shaft on the WP..and was it the seal on the timing cover..or the WP? Cause I have the receipt and can go exchange the WP if needed..Id rather not since I have all the fittings already on the one I have.
If its the Timing Cover..I've never actually pulled that off...The guy that installed my cam and everything did all the engine work..so will I have to replace any gaskets if I pull off the Timing cover just to inspect the seal for the WP driveshaft??
Re: WaterPump Drive-shaft
I'm sorry I think I'm tierd but you said it's leaking oil right? So it wouldn't be the seal on the wp.
I changed mine a long time ago but there are seals that go into the timing chain cover that you can replace (I did).
That might be why it's leaking also I know there are light blue (when there new) o-rings on the opti. shaft. But I can't remember if there are one's for the wp too.
Could be those.
I thought I had some pics in my pc somewhere I'll look some more. hth

Re: WaterPump Drive-shaft
bdc..when you say you replaced your timing cover seals..did you have to take off the whole timing cover and replace any gaskets? I dont have any money right now to go buying gaskets and stuff..i do have sealant though (blue stuff). The funny part is..my old WP didnt have GREESE all built up around the driveshaft..it was pretty much clean. The oil yes..is obviously from the timing cover..not WP since no oil passes through the WP. It sounds like im a cheapo..but I got laid off and have ZIP in my account
so even a few bux for gaskets isnt gonna cut it. Since my old WP didnt have greese all over it...Im wondering if both happen to coincidentally started to leak..timing cover oil..and wp greese..
I seriously have no luck with my car..i treat my ride with so much respect and clean it better than anyone i know..is it too much to ask for this less than 4k miled motor to behave normal?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?! LOL
