waterpump drive seal

whats going on here? I bought a timing cover kit from advanced auto and the water pump drive seal is wrong. I call the GM dealer and order a seal using the part number off the stock seal and get the same seal as the one from advanced auto.
niether seal fits around the shaft. I specifically asked for one for a 94 timing cover for each one (not that I think it makes a difference.)

this is what I have to work with:

old one on left, new on right.

I also noticed the old one has a spring around the inside to keep tension, the new one does not.

where can I get the correct seal?

The 'new' one is correct, it 'supercedes' the other older one...
You should get 2, they are hard to install correctly..
A search should reveal a few 'methods' to try to get it right..
I used the WP shaft as a 'pilot' to get in..

10217886 is the correct seal. The other one will probably work, too. They fit snugly, but as Mtrhds94Z said, they can be hard to install over the shaft without damaging it.

Ok, good, I have the right one. thanks guys.

now on to more questions:
you say I should have gotten two? two water pump seals?

and which way is this installed? logical way seems to be part number out but it doesnt seem to slide on that way. I don't want to damage the seal.

I cant believe im having trouble with a simple water pump drive seal lol

Part # out, it is a pain to install. As mentioned, search around for the proper method to use.

That's for when you destroy the first one, the other one will be right there and you won't have to run to the parts store.

Re: waterpump drive seal

Hey, I posted this exact concern a few days back! I had the same fear that the new WP front cover seal was bogus, because the old one looked different. Also, the new seal didn't seem to be pliable enough to seal anything. I guess that's the right seal though, judging from the responses we both received...

I would use a socket(same diameter as coupling) instead of the WP coupling if it isn't smooth-mine wasn't. I ended up replacing the other two front cover seals only, because the WP seal wasn't leaking.

The other seals that pertain to the WP are the 2 small o-rings that slide over the shafts on the WP and the one sticking out of the timing cover. They keep anything from getting inside the coupling.

use a freeze plug and delete it...run electric. that drive bearing is notorious for falling into the motor after about 100k miles or so.

my car is being returned to bone stock so there is no need for mods. if the next owner told me they wanted an electric water pump in it I would have no problem installing it as the car is apart right now. however I havent found a new owner yet so its just going together stock

thanks guys for all the input. dont know where Id be without this site!

With the viscious amount of beating it takes to get that bearing out of most cars... I doubt it would just "fall in"

I don't think it's too notorious either, b/c like shoebox, I've never heard of that happening.
