waterproofing opti??

I am sick of tired of when it rains or snows, or I run into a huge puddle my car runs poorly and starts misfiring and often dies. I have to wait until the ignition dries off before the car runs normal again. I also throw codes showing multiple misfires when this happens.

I'm thinking about wrapping up the opti in maybe some plastic or installing a shield to stop water from hitting it. Has anyone done this, and/or has pics of an install??

I think the easiest way is to just wrap it up in a plastic bag, thoughts on this?

Re: waterproofing opti??

Spray your opti in a heat proof rubberized type undercoating spray. Then spray it again AFTER you install it to make sure all connections and wiring is covered. Should do the trick.

Re: waterproofing opti??

Back in the model "A" days when the dist was on the front the country boys use to pack the dist with axle grease. That way they could drive through shallow streams and not be drounded out in the middle.
Not many bridges in those days.

Re: waterproofing opti??

You could replace it with a non-vented opti, but that's probably more work than it's worth. If it dies on you though you may want to consider the non-vented as an option for a replacement.

Re: waterproofing opti??

I just replaced this thing, opti works fine when it's not wet, lol.

You know what, I think i may get a piece of aluminum and somehow make a shie;d out of it, so nothing can get splashed up on it. I'll post pics

Re: waterproofing opti??

Just put sealer around the seam and add the venting. There are a couple of pages on the web describing how to do this. They are also linked in old threads on this site.

But if you've already been getting this one wet then sealing it isn't going to save it because the corrosion has already started.

Re: waterproofing opti??

You can always throw a 4" lift kit on the car and coat the opti in aerosol foam insulation and duct tape.

No, seriously, I sheild might work, but it would be nice to know where the water is getting in that way you can fix the exact reason rather than trying to cover the whole thing. Maybe its a seam, use some RTV. Maybe its a connection, use some electrical tape, etc.

Re: waterproofing opti??

or cover it in a dielectric grease - i know when guys do mud bogging competitions they coat all electrical parts in a thick grease cause it repels the water

Are you sure it isn't water getting into the air filter and through the MAF?
Just a thought...
