Water Pump Seal

GM Part number 12553792.

It's a rubber o-ring about 1/2" outside diameter.

Where does it go?

I'm replacing my Opti and water pump so I ordered one of these seals as well since they're only like 50 cents.

I couldn't locate the original on or near the water pump or Opti drive shafts and I don't see any mention of it in the shop manual.

Car is a 94 T/A.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Must be the water pump drive shaft o rings, one goes on the water pump drive shaft it's self, and the other on the shaft that goes through the timing cover.

Thanks.

Now excuse me if this is a stupid question, but...

Where on the shaft does this O ring go?

In looking at the end that engages with the actual WP drive, there appears to be a small groove behind the splined section. This seems like a logical place for the O ring but can anyone confirm that?

Thanks again.

Okay.

So what do these O rings do?

The water pump has a pressed in seal to keep the water in and the engine cover has a pressed in seal to keep the oil in. If the O rings go on the pump shafts, it seems like all they're doing is sealing both ends of the shaft coupling. What fer?

You should dab a little grease on the shafts before installing the coupling. The o-rings seal out dirt and keep the shafts and coupling from grinding themselves into powder.
