water pump replacement

ok so my water pump is starting to leak now, i hear about people doing electric water pumps but i am not sure what i should do, i got the basic bolt-ons. Is it worth doing an ewp and whats the procedure for installing one of those? plus what can you use to monitor an ewp? whats are the price differences?

An electric water pump will be in the cost ballpark of a stock replacement mechanical pump. The pump can add a gain of close to 10 hp at the wheels, whether it is worth it or not is your call. There are systems on the market that make an audible noise when there is some sort of failure with the electric pump or its electrical system. As for the procedure, you have to press the impeller out of the old water pump housing and put a plug in its place and then wire the thing up. Basically, it will be a little more involved then if you were to just install a new mechanical pump.

the hardest part is the wiring. Your gonna need a 30amp fog light relay from the auto parts store and use this how-to:

*You dont have to remove the timing cover and remove the water gear*

The nice thing is once you clearance the housing and install the e pump, if it ever fails it's just a matter of unplugging the electrical connection and removing a few bolts to replace it.

The question is whether the risk of inconvenience is worth 10hp. When the electric pump goes out, even if you have a "warning beep", the car's going to sit right in that spot until you can get a stock pump to put on it and/or have it towed home or to a shop.

With the stock pump, at least when it starts to fail you have time to get the car home.

I would shy away from the csr and spend a few more dollars and go with the meziere. The csr's have a design flaw in that the impeller is threded onto the motor in a fashion that the force of the water wants to unscrew the impeller. Hapened to me, the impeller spun off of the motor and lodged against the wp hosing blowing the fuse and damn near overheating my car. I was close enough to home that i could limp back thank god. Just my 2 cents...

What's the flow rate of the stock pump? How long can you realistically expect an electric pump to last? It seems like a fairly simple way to get 10 hp. Are the pumps reliable enough for daily driving?
