water pump gear
water pump gear
How do you remove the water pump gear from the shaft? I unbolted the retaining plate and took the shaft gear and bearing out of the block. Do you pull the gear off the front or the back of the shaft? Do you have to remove the bearing first? How tight should the bearing be. Mine seems to be loose. you could move the shaft about 1mm while the bearing was still in the block.

I used a gear puller and got the gear off. Im going to take it to work in a little while to put the new one on. How far does the new gear go on. I pulled everything off by pulling on the gear. Do you think that it hurt the bearing. I didnt relize that the plate only hit on the out side of the bearing. Does the bearing get pressed on to the shaft up to the shoulder.

I just talked to a friend and he told me that their is a tool to take the bearing and shaft out of the block. I just tapped it out by hitting the shaft from the back side. Is there a told to install it also? i just tapped the bering onto the shaft with a socket till it hit the shoulder. I pressed the gear so that it was almost flush with the step (I am almost sure this is where the old one was at). Could I have damaged the bearing by not using the right tool.

I've been doing alot of searches on this subject lately......
The waterpump gear and shaft can be removed from the front using a gear puller or a flathead screwdriver and alot of muscle. The shaft is pressed into the block pretty good so it won't be easy. Removing the intake is the most common way of removal and tapping it out from the back. The shaft and gear will pull out together. I don't know much about how to get the gear on the shaft without going to a machine shop. Reinstalling the shaft and gear is straight forward as it should just slide back in with a rubber mallet and some force.
I haven't done mine yet but this is what I've read in other posts. If anyone has other experiences please chime in......
