Water Pump Frustration

Hey guys, After having my remanufactured unit on for 1200 miles, it started leaking out of the weep hole . So i replaced it with a brand new unit.
The first time i bolted everything up, bled the system, and started it. It ran fine for about 15 minutes, until the car warmed up. I have a pinhole leak on the drivers side of the block where the pump bolts to the block. So i ripped it down, bought some new gaskets. I usually dont use rtv, i usually spray 3M addheisive on the gasket and never had any problems. Any way i ripped down the pump again, re did everything, using rtv. Now it runs fine for about the same amount of time, then starts to seep on that passanger side... Same place as before, I've done WP on these cars enough and i dont know whats wrong here? Its leaking again, so Im going to the parts store to get a presure tester today so i can track this down. Any suggestions on installing this damn thing? I'm really starting to get frustrated. Thanks in advance guys.

the only thing I can think of is that not all of the gasket was completly removed on either the water pump or the block itself, its not making a full seal somehow. But you said you've done this pleanty of times, so thats more of a rookie mistake.

Did you apply teflon sealant to the mounting bolts? The bolts thread into the block close to the water path so you may be getting water through the bolt holes.

I used teflon pipe dope on all the bolts, good practice, I have no idea what else to do?

Re: Water Pump Frustration

I had a similar experience last month. Reman pump started leaking so I installed a new unit. With the Reman however I THOUGHT it was leaking out of the same spots your talking about. I forgot I left the bleeder screws open which dribbled down and made it look like it was leaking from the bolts. Other then that like someone else said maybe there is some old gasket material left on the block???

Im pretty sure the block is clean, i cleaned it for a half hour w/ a razor blade, and needle nose vise grip. Seemed to work well. I will re check everything after i get home from up north.

Gm supplies these cooling system tablets you put into the system to lap the seals after a WP install. The shop manual i have says to put it in each time a wp is changed or the coolant is changed in the system.

Re: Water Pump Frustration

Use Permatex Indian Head Shellac on the new gaskets.

Don’t put any on the water pump threads!

Use a torque Wrench, and tighten the bolts 30 Ft. pounds.

Re: Water Pump Frustration

Ok guys, one month later i have another pump. This pump is a reman from napa about a month ago. It still appears to seep out of the weep hole ever so slowly. I just left it. I have no temp issues or anything like that. My buddy said something about maybe when i took the first pump off I may have bent one of the dowels to line up the pump due to prying the pump off. I'm on my 4th or 5th pump now and i still have this issue. I just havent touched it since. It is a slow drip. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance.

If the pump is still weeping, but you don't intend to change it out, you might at least consider installing a little tube to drain the leak away from the optispark or something else to keep the pump from dumping the opti. JMHO
