water pump drive gear
Does anyone know if the water pump drive gear is still available new? I can't seem to find any info on it other than used ones on Ebay. Is it called something else? I even searched GM Part Direct without luck.
I'm looking into this because I'm going to be building a 383 soon. I intend to upgrade to an LT4 or better timing set. Thought it would be best to change out the water pump drive gear while I'm in there instead of reusing the old one.
Thanks

Re: water pump drive gear
Another option is an electric water pump and the timing chain set of your choice. Note, a lot of people are negative on the electric setup because it does or flow as much at maximum rpm.do a search and you'll see what there is to find.
I use an electric pump and switched to a Cloyes double roller chain...

Re: water pump drive gear
any idea on what my options are for changing out the drive shaft as well? I think I can reuse mine but in case I can't it would be good to have a back up.
I'm beginning to think I should just hold on to this extra 95 LT1 I have. Seems some of these parts are getting harder and harder to find.

Re: water pump drive gear
Summit carries it, although a little pricey IMO.

Re: water pump drive gear
Thanks guys. Yes, I'm referring to the drive that sticks out of the front cover that the couple goes onto. I found a listing for the bearing on an el camino website but the shaft itself I'm not finding anywhere. Can the sealing surface be polished if necessary on the shaft or will that make it too small?

Re: water pump drive gear
There's an Engine Builder magazine article on "Rebuilding The Chevrolet LT1 Engine" and it includes a close-up photo of the bearing cage/retainer plate/gear/shaft assembly - which as far as I know is all one assembly - , with the caption "Make sure..... that the seal surface isn't grooved before reusing it." Do a search and take a look at the picture. Reducing the diameter of the sealing surface would seem to be risky, given the difficulty of installing the seal correctly.
The "How To Rebuild Small-Block Chevy LT1/LT4 Engines" soft cover book also shows the assembly as a complete unit.
If you found the bearing, that should be the complete unit. Hopefully the old El Camino website isn't showing something from the Gen 1 version of the LT-1.

Re: water pump drive gear
They are talking about the bearing itself being sourced from a bearing supplier

I was hoping to find the complete assembly but shoebox says it's discontinued. If someone knows what the part number was, I can always do a search that way, too. I'll be changing the timing set to the extreme set which will give me a new gear but I still have to consider the shaft and bearing.
Thanks Fred
