My guess is about half of the opti replacement jobs are totally unneccesary, but the dealerships love the extra income.

Hey guys, I have a 95 z, what should I cover up under the hood when I'm cleaning the engine?

You don't have to cover anything up. Just avoid the front of the engine with water as much as possible. I clean mine by spraying everything with Purple Power(cheaper spin off of Simple Green), hose it off with a water hose spraying lightly, blow most of the water off with an air hose, allow to sit to dry the rest of the way, and then cover with a nice layer of Armor All or Son of a Gun. I'll usually go back after it has sat for a little bit to wipe down the thick spots of protectant. I have the stock opti with 140,000 on the odometer. A friend of mine has a 94 TA that sprays his engine bay off with a pressure washer all of the time with no trouble. Personally, I think he's asking for it, but he has been lucky so far.
barkerg, glad it worked out all right. Optis are neither cheap nor fun to replace.
