By warm up do you mean sit and idle? Or, do you mean drive easy and not rag on it?

Also, I think your question depends on the ambient temperature a lot. I live in FL and typically I just start it right up and drive off but I don't really get on it for at least 3 to 5 minutes. Now if it were colder I think I might just let it sit till the temps came up to operating temperature.

most manufacturers say its better to just turn it on and drive easy till it warms up instead of warming the engine up idiling...if you just sit there warming the engine up, your tranny and rear differental fluids will still be cold...of course i live on the coast so i dont have to worry about too cold of weather either

i usually warm mine up for about 5 min utes but i the summer i dont as long but as a rule of thumb i wait at least 30 sec to get the oil pumpin good idont think sitting there letting it idol is any better on the car the driving it easy for a little whilel
i think the worst thing for the car is actually starting it

Usually about 5-10 mins, but I always make sure to drive easy for about 3-4 miles also.

well in the temperatures we been getting here it would have to idle for 20+ minutes to get up to operating temp. i usually give it a cigarette of time to warm up idleing while im standing in the wind outside freezing my *** off... i'd say about 3 minutes and then i go easy on it fro about 2 miles... i don't like how when the oil is cold the oil pressure jumps to 50 and stays there till 3 miles down the road

I drive it easy until the oil pressure gauge dips fairly low at idle, idicating that the oil temp is up to OT.

Then its eligible for a thrashing.

I usually just take it easy for a few minutes. Sitting and letting it idle doesn't sound like the best idea to me. At idle, oil pressure is the lowest it can be. I don't know about you guys, but I want to make sure the oil is getting all over everything. If cold oil is harder to pump, and you run your car at the lowest speed, it doesn't seem to me like that is the best strategy. The whole "warming up" thing is pretty much just left over from the carburation days when cars didn't run so well until the manifold heated up.

to be perfectly honset, it depends on whether or not im late for work.

if im late i fire it up and just drive it really easy until operating temp is reached.

my prefference is to give it 5-10 min to wam up regardless of whether its cold or warm outside.

FWIW, this is harder on a car. Idling a car to warm it up puts all kinds of contaminents into the oil and puts more wear and tear on the components. Let it idle for 30 seconds and then lightly drive it. Never "hammer" on the car until the oil is up to temp... a good indication of this is when oil pressure drops to normal at idle (for those without an oil temp sensor ).

Idle does nothing to warm up the transmission or rear end either

Zero warm up time for me. I start it and drive off. Must not hurt too bad because I have no real engine repairs on any of my cars. My 96SS has 97,000 miles on it too and still runs damn good
