Re: Want a performance cam but no lope

Like I said my 306 didn't lope very bad at 1k idle. If your worried that much about lope and your hotcam on a 110 is too chopey then maybe 306 isn't right for you. With full p&p heads I would get a cam to work with them and screw the lope. Otherwise it's almost a waste to have all that nice head work. But to each their own, everyone wants what they want, so do whatever will make you happiest while cruising in your ride. JMHO

A hotcam on a 110LSA is actually pretty mild IMHO, that's 3 degs of positive overlap. That's not much at all, 13-17degs is driveable too.

More aggressive cam profiles would help, i've run a 214/224 like that on a 110LSA that was a complete sleeper.

Is the volume of the exhaust the problem or the driving of the car a problem? You can always put more muffler on the car to help out with the noise.

No the volume isnt bad really. I honestly think its my tune... Im still on a mail order tune. Im going to get a dyno tune and see if it helps out. Because I know when I was running my stock ecu with my mids it was alot louder, then i got it tuned, and everything smoothed out and quieted up.

Make sure you have someone who is good do the tune, it's probably part throttle stuff that needs to be fixed if anything.

That 214/224 was .560 lift and it was on a carbed motor and you would be suprised as how tame it was even with the carb tuned for max power.

My Joe Overton cam(220/226) on my old stock bottom setup was pretty tame. Here's a sound clip.

It went 11.71 at 116.7 in horrible weather.

Sounds nice, but the cam is still pretty obvious.

When my car is warmed up you have to listen closley to hear the lope and it idles around ~950. I'm going to the track tomarrow to see how it does with a 6-speed in, I'm hoping for 115+ mph traps... These "tiney" cams still perform good at the track even though they aren't dyno queens. Mine pulls hard as hell from idle to 6100.

Re: Want a performance cam but no lope

I've been running an LPE 211/219 .533"/.560" on a 112 in my 383 since 1995. It idles damn near a stocker and, while considered tiny for a 383, has helped me go 118 mph in the 1/4. There was probably more in the combo because LPE is very conservative on their tunes (2 year/24000 mile warranty). If you cap up my borla it sounds like a stocker. Idle is 850rpm. Highway mileage always in the 20s...

My new Joe Overton cam will probably sound pretty choppy, but not much worse..It'll be on a 111...

Speed demon 24: be sure to let us (me) know how you do. I have 97SS with heads, 210/224 and shortie headers w. M-6. Just curious what I could expect with this setup.

thx

I think that is a pretty good argument that bigger isn't always better, the vast majority of this forum would say a cam that small is not worth the effort to swap into a 350 much less your motor. You are going fast on big broad torque whereas most try to do it on peak HP numbers and it takes a lot more to setup a car to be fast on peak numbers, because you have to try to keep it in a narrower rpm range.

Re: Want a performance cam but no lope

Thanks^^^^

John was a big fan of high lift, short duration cams combined with relatively small valves (2.00/1.56). The idea was/is to move air with high velocity and get terrific, flat torque curves. The hp will follow. Drivablility with this set up is great, mpg is great, and MPH is great. And it passed MDs emissions tests.

I just recently decided to go with Joe O. for a custom cam and to freshen my LPE heads because LPE just isn't doing any R&D on the LT1s anymore. Joe is thinking along the same lines as John did for my set up...short duration 224/226 @ .050 and high lift .560ish/.570 for a "small and nasty" cam on a 111 that should still be easily tuned and give good drivability...along with some lower ETs and higher MPH...No, imho, bigger ain't always better...

Another for the Crane 227. My idle is set to 850 and it sounds
stock to the untrained ear and very very very mild to the trained ear.
If I could figure out my stupid a$$ problem it's possible to get this sucker
up to the 330 rwhp / 340 rwtq range with a 300+ torque curve from
2,000 to 4,500. Not too bad for stock heads and cast iron manifolds.

Sorry for the hijack:

Mike, Has Jeff got any more ideas for you? You might want to take it to VanGordon and Brown for full diagnostics.
