Very loud ticking

I have open long tubes right now. The car was running perfect for about a week, now there is a very loud ticking comming out of the driver side header. It isnt comming from under the hood, its comming out of the header under the car. I know for a fact every single header bolt is very tight, I just tightened them a few hours ago (after this loud ticking started). If I rev the car, the ticking goes away until the RPM's get back down to around 2500 rpm. Also, when I rev the car up, it has a different tone than it did the other day. anyone have any ides what it is?

Where's the rest of your exhaust? You can't run open headers for too long. You need some back pressure. Prolly smoked a valve.

I disagree. You can run open headers as long as you want to (long tubes anyways)

even if your bolts are tight, it could be an exhaust leak. All it takes is one loose bolt, and once that gasket blows out; it doesn't matter how tight the bolts are, it will leak. IMO, change the gaskets

Re: Very loud ticking

Im pretty sure there wouldnt be a leak if hes running open headers. and he certainly wouldnt be hearing it come from out of the exhaust. it would be in the engine compartment, if he could even hear an exhaust leak over the open headers, lol. im surprized he can hear anything!

i agree they are loud...but i've been there done that. even with the bolt torqued down all the way i could hear the leak with open headers. Under the car you could see the light peeking out from in between the head and the header from the explosion in the combustion chamber....it was kinda cool, but at the same time sucked...

Re: Very loud ticking

Well when I pop the hood, the ticking does not come from under there. The gaskets are brand new also, and they aren't paper. Like I said, the ticking goes away when I rev the car to liek 4000 rpm's. I will go out and start the car at night to see if I see anything that would show the gasket is blown.
