vats bypass question

I recently lost the keys to my 93 V6 camaro. I've let the car sit for awhile procrastinating...not wanting to give in to a locksmith's outrageous costs, when all the sudden I remembered that the VATS system can be bypassed in these cars. Does anyone have any links that show how to do this? And Can I buy an aftermarket ignition cylinder for my car for relatively cheap, like say from Autozone or something. Thanks for all the help...

I had this problem when I installed a TPI in my old '88 camaro. I do not know if the hz is the same for the LT1. There are some people that distribute mechanisms that bypass the VATS. I used a temporarily one which I created, until I found someone who produced them, forget the name of company-sorry. I had the wire from VATS from computer hooked up to (aproximately) 16" 2x4 board with a strip of sheet metal wraped around it length-wise. On top of that was 29 pieces of black electrical tape, forming 30 strips of sheet metal. On one end of this board, the wire from the computer came in, on the other was a wire connected to ground. The purpose of it is to get a 30 hz signal (the wire from vats has to touch ground 30 times per second) so therefore, you time yourself at your stroke across the board and create a 30 hz signal. The VATS may produce a different signal in the the LT1s, I could be wrong. I could only recomend getting a wire schematic and doing some research. When I was stumped at my TPI swap, it took a week to find that VATS was holding me back and another week to figure out a solution.

Hope this helps

I forgot to include that the signal is only needed when the engine is cranking, once it starts running, no need to keep the signal going. It is rather quite easy, or was for me. My computer was laying on the floor when I had my TPI swap and messed around with the VATS. The computers in the LT1s are under the hood, you would need to run wires inside the car, but shouldn't be hard at all.

Hope this helps

Oh yea, I forgot you could do that too. But my ECU (not PCM) was from the car I bought the TPI off of, so I couldnt work with that. $18 is a good deal.

If you can figure out what ohm resistance your keys have/had, just put theat ohm resister in between the two wires like on the pic.
