Which valvetrain setup

I am planning on doing a 224/230 cam install in the next 2 months or so. I havent bought anything as of yet for this because I am unsure of some parts.

I need to know what springs will work with this cam without having to machine the heads? Also I would like to know if the springs can work with both stock and 1.6rr's? If they can just "drop in" thats best.

The car will be as follows. 94z28 A4 mildly built, 3000 stall, 3.42 gears, stock lt1(converted timing setup), electric waterpump, unported heads, pacesetter LT's and ory, and a flowmaster american thunder catback.

I know without a dyno the #'s are just a guess but if anyone can give most likely flywheel and rear wheel hp/tq numbers that would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Which valvetrain setup

It's 536/544 on 1.6 rr's

Either 918 beehives of CM612 springs will work for this combination... I'm sure there's others, but those are the two I'm familiar with.

Re: Which valvetrain setup

I just put the 918's on my SS with a 233/239 cam and they work great. The 918's don't require any machining.

About how much would that all cost besides the timing chain?

Re: Which valvetrain setup

6-800 maybe depending on where u get it from, not really sure i know

1.6rrs are like 265
springs 160
retainers 60
7/16 studs will be a little more
guide plates

ull prolly end up having ot get psuhrods to

lifters are fine depending on mileage

Re: Which valvetrain setup

Now on this specific setup does it matter if you get NSA rockers or SA? I know the NSA are stronger but would this particular setup benefit from them? If it doesnt require them at what point it is necessary?

Edit: also when do you need to upgrade to 7/16 studs?

Re: Which valvetrain setup

Go with the NSA rockers and the 7/16 studs. Your looking for a nice solid set-up. Not something that's going to give up a little to deflection.

Re: Which valvetrain setup

Im pretty sure that the 800 dollar remark is a over estimate.

Im getting springs, lock, and retainers for 100shipped

Im also getting nsa comp pro mags 1.6, studs, hardened pushrods, and guideplates for 150shipped.

finally after 1 year my luck is actually good.

Now all I need is the cam and Im sure if I wait long enough I can find that too for a good deal.

Re: Which valvetrain setup

Why do you want to go with the XE 224/230 when there are so many other options out there?

The 918 beehives are supposed to be good springs and can handle much more abuse than the 224/230 can give them.

Re: Which valvetrain setup

Because I like the numbers the cam can put down and the HP and TQ wont kill my 120k block Im putting them all in. Im not trying to get the max effort cam for these springs. I just want reliability, streetability, and once the tracks open up some good times. I figure I will hit 12's at least.

EDIT: The car and all the parts on it have 80k but I smoked the bearings in it due to low oil pressure. I found a good deal on a shortblock from a reputable member that states that this one held good pressure at idle and wot. I will eventually be getting a completely forged bottom end and then will step up the cam and nitrous.

Re: Which valvetrain setup

Yea but check some of the prices for those parts new, not used from another member. I wouldnt want "used" parts in an already iffy motor with high miles that im concerned about. If you get studs, guide plates, push rods, springs, 10* stuff, seats, shims, and RR's, your looking at an easy 600 for good parts, 800 if your getting the higher end parts. Do you want to risk blowing a motor from using cheap used springs? I wouldnt. It will cost you alot more in the long haul. Used parts, and reliability, dont go hand in hand. Buy them new, then you have piece of mind, and you'll know how much abuse they have actually seen

Re: Which valvetrain setup

Im not going to just throw em all in there and call it a day. Everything will be checked. If it blows after that I will roll it down a hill and collect insurance.

The parts are good ones, almost everyone uses comp pro mags. Its not like Im using uncle bobs pen springs. Most people Im dealing with have a good reputation anyways.
