Valvetrain noise - Solid Roller

Need some advice from those that have experience with valve adjustment when running a solid roller. I got the proper lash from the engine builder and found that most were nearly right on, possibly just a little loose. Anyway, after adjusting them we put everything back together and heard some noise. Nothing that sounded very terrible but didn't seem right. So we opened it up, found that all but about 3 seemed just a little loose again. Hmm... okay well we went through it again and put everything back together. Still made some noise (seems to be cyl 4 or 6) and after opening it up again, most seemed exactly as we had adjusted them but a couple were now tighter than before. Adjusted them again, same noise. Not too bad but is a rather "solid" type valvetrain noise.

Method I used for getting it on the base circle was basically to get one of the valves fully open and then just when it starts to close again, I adjust the opposite valve (I vs E). Does this seem like a reasonable method? It's basically what is described on the Jesel website.

How normal is it to get some noise like that with a solid roller? Anything that I should be checking other than lash?

Thanks!

Todd

Expect some noise, just really fast ticking. If you keep getting different lash readings then you arent being consistant when you are setting the lash.

You should adjust the intake when the exhaust is starting to open, and adjust the exhaust when the intake is about 1/2 way down closing. EOIC (exhaust opening, intake closing)

You also might have base circle runout. I got a cam that had .003" variance on some lobes from one end of the base circle to the other, just a gradual increase in the lift. Obviously, I sent the cam back. Just another thing to check when you install a cam along with opening and closing points, total lift and centerlines

Thanks! This is probably part of where I was going wrong. I think that I'm also getting some noise possibly from the rockers hitting the valve covers.
