Valvetrain Inquiry

I am going to put on some new 1.6 pro mag rockers along with some 918 springs pretty soon. If I am going to do a cam install in the future could I go ahead and put in some hardened pushrods and some Comp R lifters in the motor with the stock cam without hurting anything or would I have to wait for the time of the cam swap?

i was wondering the same thing. i know the hardened pushrods would be fine and i'd imagine the comp r's wouldn't hurt anything, as long as you set the correct valve lash on them.

Sure, you can put in the new lifters now as well as the pushrods, but there's really no point. Wait until you put in the new cam, otherwise you'll just be be doing the same thing twice (R&R the lifters), which will make you buy the intake gaskets twice.

Just go with the new springs and rockers for now and do the others when you have all the parts in hand.

I suggest installing the right springs for the future cam. I.e., you should know beforehand what cam you are going to install so as to have enough spring to support the lift.JMHO

Yep that's a good point bubba.

The spring pressure of the new springs will stress the stock pushrods and lifters and could cause problems. It's a good idea to do them now since you are going to have to do them later also.

Can the pushrods be replaced without removing the intake? I know you have to for the lifters but I just wasnt sure on the rods. I'd rather just go ahead and do the springs, rockers, and pushrods if they only require the valve covers to come off.

PS: Anybody know where to get cheap retainers/locks for some CC 918 springs?

Yeah you only have to take off the valve covers.

Cheap isin't the right thing for the parts here it's the right parts. Figure about $80 for good machined locks and steel retainers for those springs if you order from Summit and Jegs. Stamped locks are cheaper but also weaker and the $10 saved is a waste of $$$ once they break and you bend a valve.
