valve lash question

Alright, I recently had a valve job done on my 96 LT1 and put the heads back on and put the car together. I lashed all the valves like I was supposed to according to shoebox's website and the haynes manual. After lashing the valves with Number 1 TDC we turned it over to number 6 up and did those valves, I noticed that some of the valves that had been done, still had lash, so I tighted them again. I did this on a few valves. My question is, what will this do? The car seems to have a bad miss now, but it might be the fact that the gas in it is really old. My dad thinks maybe some of the valves might not be seating or something like that because I overtightened the rockers on those that had been lashed already. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Aron

http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#adjust_valves

which method did you use? Sounds like you used this one;

When at #1 TDC you can adjust the following valves:

Intake: 1, 2, 5, 7
Exhaust: 1, 3, 4, 8

Rotate the crank one revolution until the pointer is again at 12 o'clock. This will let you adjust the remainder of the valves. If you did #1 the previous time, you should be now at #6 TDC.

When at #6 TDC you can adjust the following valves:

Intake: 3, 4, 6, 8
Exhaust: 2, 5, 6, 7

I think this method will get them CLOSE but not right on. I start off with that method to get them close so the car will start, but I always go back and do them while the engine is running.

Re: valve lash question

If you are doing the right valves at the right time, you should not be going back and adjusting anything. You probably have some too tight, now.

Re: valve lash question

If you're spinning the engine over by the crank nut without it running, does the spring pressure pushing down on the lifters cause some of the oil to bleed out of them? Maybe that's why it seems they're loose? Just wondering...

Yeah, that's basically what can happen. The adjusting guide on my site specifically says not to be fooled by this or be tempted to tighten them further.

Re: valve lash question

I know shoebox, I couldn't help myself I guess. My dad told me I was screwing up but I couldn't help it. We pulled the valve covers back off and are going to readjust them and hope that helps and it runs smoothly like it should.

Thanks,
Aron
