Lightbulb Need advise on valvetrain upgrades...

Long story short i need to refreshen my valvetrain and possibly throw a cam in at the same time. I am looking at replacing lifters, pushrods, 1.6 rr's, springs, locks and retainers. I have a few questions though.

1. What is a good cam for stock heads? I have all bolt on's and want to gain some more power, but without touching the heads. I was thinking cc306 but im not sure if it would be too big for stock heads? how about the 305 or the 503??

2. As far as parts go, what do you recommend? I know i am going with a set of OEM lifters, and stock length hardened pushrods, but what about springs, 1.6 rr's and anything else i will need?

3. With the cam and valvetrain i will be putting in will i need to upgrade the TB or the injectors? I plan on having my tune updated so that will not be a problem.

Thanks a lot, Jeff

If you're just doing a cam and no head work, you won't be putting out enough power to over-demand the stock injectors.

Do a search about the best cam FOR YOU. I dunno what drivability or power you are after. CC306 is pretty big and with that comes poor gas mileage, surging and lack of low end grunt. Plus to make the big numbers you have to spin it it pretty high.

A lot of guys are raving about the new beehive springs... a lot of technology has gone into them. They are easy to install and should handle the cc306 w/o any trouble. Only downside is they are a bit more $$ compared to other springs that will do the job just as well like the old CC986/987s.

Other cam options to consider are the GM cams which are actually made by crane, 845, 846 & 847, the last one is similar to the cc306. Beehive springs have an advantage over regular springs is that they're light, running them is equevalant to running Ti valves without the cost.

Re: Need advise on valvetrain upgrades...

Well i did some more research and decided on the GM 846 cam. I have heard nothing but good about it, and it seems to fit what im looking for.

I am on a budget, so i dont think the beehive springs would be the best choice. Will the CC986's work fine with 1.6rr's and 10 degree retainers and locks?

Thanks for all your help so far, Jeff
