valve lash

What is the most accurate way to set the valve lash on our cars. We have done it running (so the lifters would pump up) and not running. Both ways (ya know, spin the pushrod till it dosent turn than a quater to half a turn) but neither seems real accurate. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Prorac1

The best way is to do it while the car is running. You want to back the nut off untill it starts to "tick", then tighten about 1/4 - 1/2 turn and lock the nut. Also, when doing it without the car running....0 lash is not when the pushrod doesn't turn any more, its when there is no up/down movement or play. If you have it to the point where you can't twist the pushrod, your probably slightly past 0 lash already.
