Upgrade LT1 or sell and buy LS1 car

I have a 95 Z28 with a 355 M6, Shorty Headers, Highflow Cat, Flowmaster Muffler, Eagle Crank, Scat Rods, 1.6 RR, K&N CAI. I've enjoyed the car on the weekends just playing but now I wanna get into drag racing at the track. Several people have told me to sell my car and upgrade to a LS1 car. I wanna know if the ls1 cars are that much better. Couldn't I just make a few upgrades to my car and compete. The top street cars at the track are a ls1 camaro, a ws6, and a mach 1. I'm not sure of what upgrades they have to their cars.

Im biased... But the LT1s are more than capable of going fast.

Is the Eagle a cast crank? If so, you are starting from scratch. Stock heads, stock cam, shorty headers, no complete catback.... You have a CAI, 1.6RR's, and 5 extra cubic inches to build on. For serious HP you would be better off with a stock crank.

Maybe just spray it and hope it holds together.

It is a cast crank and there is a zex kit partially installed with a window switch but being a newbie I never tried to complete the install. After reading a little the zex kit isn't hard to install so I may try that this weekend.

Cast Eagle crank is killing you. Its unfortunate. Was it rebuilt with hyper or forged pistons? That will also determine how much spray you can run safely. Hyper pistons I would not go more than 150 shot.

It would be better to know your ET goals. The competition listed above could be in any range of ETs. And there are multiple ways to get you to that ET based on budget, skills, and compromises you are willing to make. Give us something more to work with.

A budget & goals would help....any head work ? What cam in the rebuild ?
if not you basically have a little more than a stock engine
check these guys out. www.elliottsportworks.com
I think you would be ok with the cast crank if you don't spin the engine to high
stay under 400 hp

LT1s with a head / cam package will run with the best of them. Depends on how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go.

Thanks for all the info. Can i get some suggestion for a high 6 low 7 1/8 mile build? This isn't a daily driver anymore so now i'm looking to have some fun with the car.

You're looking for a setup capable of the equivalent of a 10.6 - 11.2 second 1/4-miler. That's going to take a very well built naturally aspirated engine, or a moderate build with a power adder. You can somewhat control the engine cost by going for a large amount of weight reduction.

You're also looking at a new rear axle assembly, a killer clutch, some very sticky tires and major suspension upgrades.

How deep are your pockets?
