update on cam install day like 7

well i finnally got the dowel pin out, using brute force and my drill. got the cam installed, timing sprockets/crank, double roller chain. oil filter off, 4 springs done, 12 to go. hopefully were looking at finishing this weekend. gotta wait on the electric pump though. and new opti. hopefully next week. should be good soon. later updates to come. u can goto http://curtiscomputer.servebeer.com for some pics, there in misc pics. i will be posting videos soon of the whole process.

I'm swapping cams also. I took my new cam (it was used) to work and a guy in the machine shop had a tool that welded a rod to it, and pulled the old dowl pin out. Pretty slick. It took him about 10 minutes.

Good luck on the rest of the springs.

yea my machine shop couldnt get the pin out.

No offense, but any machine shop that can't pull a dowel pin isn't getting near my engine.

lol true that, i dont know what was wrong, he was worried about hurting the cam i think. he got the stocker out but couldnt get the CC one out, is it welded u think? i drilled it out. i wish my water pump would get here, can wait to get it runnin

It probably just had a stronger press fit. I would be very nervous about drilling it out because the location of that dowel is extremely critical to accurate engine timing since that is what clocks the optispark. Also, by drilling it you may have opened the hole up too much and might not have the necessary press to hold the dowel in properly. I imagine that it would have come out just fine with a slide hammer and collet, you might just have to make a little fixture to hold the cam by non critical surfaces.

well i used a smaller bit then the thing the folded the dowel onto itslef then pulled it out, then taped the other in, it stayed pretty tight
