untuned cc306 guys in here....

im planning on tossing a 306 in my car along with headers/true duals and supporting valvetrain obviously, in the next month or so, and ill be going on road trip to iowa(from chicago) a few weeks after the work is done. hopefully it will have enough break in time for a roller cam before the road trip, although it will all be 2,000 rpm cruising at 80 mph anyways.

now onto my main questions....

i dont plan on getting the car tuned right away as money will be tight but im not worried about the drivability around town so much, just wondering how fuel mileage will be with this thing and no tune. its a stock motor, just the cam, exhaust, and a ported intake manifold, and the basic bolt ons. car already has a PCM4less basic tune. im sure ill have a SES light on because of no cat and whatnot but any other problems anyone sees with this...

I would wait until you had the funds for a tune.

X2 on the tune. When my cc306 was installed, the car wasn't driveable at all and needed tuned badly.

my buddies LS1 with an MS4 was still drivable with no tune... i dont understand how the car wont be driveable at all. i can see poor gas mileage and bad issues on the street at low rpms but other than that.... dunno why it couldnt handle it....

Well, it is up to you. I would want to tune it if I were driving all that distance. When my cam was installed, it was running super rich even at idle, and cam surge may be a problem for you. I wouldn't worry about breaking the cam in, there is no break in period for these cams. Just make sure you do the couple oil changes right after you put all the new valvetrain stuff in. Try looking around in town, there should be some reputable people in town that can do a tune for you using a wideband, instead of ordering a mail order tune again. They are probably even cheaper. JMO

I would definetly send the PCM to Madz or Pcmforless again if I were you to ensure I am getting everything I can out of my bump stick installation.Either that or go the DIY route. You went from the OE Cam to a fairly agressive cam right...only seems logical.

Another vote to wait and do it right. Why chance it?

im gonna take it to Ion i think after the swap, he lives down the street from my dorm (although i wont be here when the cars ready for the tune) but w/e its 50 minutes from my house, and it's cheap. a "mail order tune" for that popular of a cam should be close enough to perfect right?hehe

Given they have all the information of your build, I'm sure you'll get a tune that's pretty spot-on.

I just finished my cc306 swap yesterday. My car started fine and idles on it's own with no problem. On the other hand I wouldn't drive it a mile down the street. Even with a tune for all my old mods it's still blowing black smoke when I give it a little gas (over 2500rpm). I strongly recomend sending the computer out for a tune when you start the swap. I deal with Bryan at PCM for less. He has done tons of cars with this cam and has some great tunes.

That is what I would do, with that type of cam, I wouldn't plan on doing any driving with it, especially long trips, without having the PCM tuned.
