"Unknown coolant loss"

I noticed my low coolant light came on the other day, found the coolant was low in the radiator about 3-4 inches, light went out & stayed out, but on my way home from the track it came back on about 15 miles from the house (total round trip 120 miles), i checked the fluid this morning & it is down a good 8-10 inches in the radiator, i can't find ANY leaks anywere, the pass floor is dry, i don't smell antifreeze while in the car, the oil is nice & clean, so i'm stumped , i'll re-fill it again & see what happens, any idea of what to check?

Is your overflow tank full? If so, change your radiator cap ~ the valve is not allowing the water to be pulled back ~ I've had this happen twice on my 94 Z (180,XXX miles).

??? These are V8's - of course they wont last if they're dogged. I've
had a V8 go over 300k miles and a V6 go over 225k miles. The Z
has 156k miles now and she's still really strong!

I think this might be the cause, because the overflow is full & the cap looks old, i'll change it tomorrow.

Now that we have gotten on the subject of mileage lol, my pig has 157,XXX on it, & just pulled off a 13.7 @ 101 last night on a so-so 2.17 60ft. with street tires & bolt-ons , these are by far a great engine, especially if there taken care of like this one was.

It also could be the overflow hose and/or grommet causing a leak, thus not letting the coolant to be sucked back in - instead it is sucking back in air.

start looking for steam out the tail pipes. im afraid those were my exact symptoms when i blew my head gasket. im in the process of installing a cam and other upgrades since i had most of the engine disassembled.

I would borrow a pressure tester from AZ and look and listen for leaks.

500k?! I find it hard to believe but i guess it makes sense if you keep up with everything and do a lot of preventative maintenance.

No steam in the pipes, no water in the oil neither, doesn't run hot, no exhaust smell in the radiator.

I had a problem like this and after thinking I blew a head gasket I noticed there was a crack in my rad on the tank under where the cap is. There was no coolant smell and it never left a puddle. The crack was so small only steam got out when I was driving. I felt like an *** for missing it for a few months but I was happy to see it wasn't anything major.
