universal x from summitt doesnt just hook right up!

it seems like the pipe would have to be bent or an extra piece added to fit in the x correctly. what gives??? i thought it was pretty straight forward install??

I did mine with a 14" chop saw and a mig welder. It was the 2 1'2 universal X from Summit. From 3" collectors on Pacesetter's to dumps at the axle.

I did the same with mine with a little cutting and my mig also it just had to hammer the pipe from the driver side a bit to make it not rub the undercarriage. It should fit with no problem other then alittle elbow grease and patience!

If I buy something that's "universal", I assume that the part I'm getting is CLOSE, but not perfect and may need modifications to make it work. Only once in a great while have I ever been lucky enough to get something "universal" that fit with no mods.

I PM'd you about this dude.....like I said you can't slide the pipes into one another because they aren't long enough to reach the collectors that way. You can either weld it like I did with the pipes barely touching one another, or have a shop extend the pipes.

Cmr0z28,

so, just to get things perfectly clear, the two pipes that come off the headers are not long enough to fit in the x-pipe correctly so you must extend the the pipes?

how much do the pipes need to be extended? i'd guess it would be about 2 1/2" seeing as you said they barley touch.

i assumed it would be a perfect fit seeing as how so many people have it and i havent heard anything about cutting and welding.

This was my exact problem. I didnt have a welder at the time nor extra pipe, so its still setting in the box. Couldnt find a shop anywhere to touch it with out cats so i ended up back with a y pipe I expected to be able to just clamp it together but i was wrong

Not sure exactly how long they would have to be extended, but it wouldn't be much. If you measure from the center of each collector, you can bring it to the exhaust shop and have them extend/weld it per your measurements.

Yep, they need to be extended (pipes coming off the headers) otherwise the driver-side pipe runs into the tranny cross-member. 2-1/2 to 3" should do the trick, but it just depends on how long the headers are. A friend's TPIS longtubes needed 2-1/2" added.
