underhood fireworks!!! does this mean they're arcing?
underhood fireworks!!! does this mean they're arcing?
car has been running fine today no missing or popping through exhaust. ran fine for 30 minutes then i let the car cool down, took off and it started popping through exhaust. the car sounded like someone was shooting a gun out the car...LOL!!! its already dark outside and i left the car on, opened the hood and pass. side wires were lighting up like fireworks. the coil was also lighting up everytime it fired and it looked like a fireworks display. driver side was fine but the car was popping real bad in the low RPM's. what does this mean(arcing), and what can i do to fix it cuz it seems like this might fix all my problems?
BTW: my wires are Autozone cheapo's, so is the coil. should i upgrade to MSD's and get a coil as well???

Re: underhood fireworks!!! does this mean they're arcing?
You should pull your wires and inspect them for cracks. If there are cracks, that may be where the spark is getting away. As for the coil, I don't know. Mine shows blue light, but I don't think it is detrimental. I've used an autozone before without problems. I would check the wires first.
Re: underhood fireworks!!! does this mean they're arcing?
damn, the wires are like 2 months old, and have like less 100 miles. i'll check those tomorrow and it looks like im gonna send the tuning as well. i'll see what the wires look like and then i'll get back to you guys. also anyone know what a DTC33 would affect?
Re: underhood fireworks!!! does this mean they're arcing?
If resistance is too great for your plugs to fire it is common to have the coil wire arc. Change all your wires to Delco premiums or other high end wires and you should be fine. I found the Delco premiums to withstand the heat better than MSD's but other good wires may work out as well.
Re: underhood fireworks!!! does this mean they're arcing?
you can see the plugs light up blue when the cylinder fires, and the coil has a fast blue spark on the bottom side. i was told that i need some good wires since my car is around 11.7-12.1 compression. dont know if its true but what are some good wires other than MSD that are pretty affordable? i havent priced anything lately so im kinda lost as far as getting parts for the car since i bought everything almost a year ago just to make the engine swap easier?
Re: underhood fireworks!!! does this mean they're arcing?
That's a halo or corona.
Ya can help it by gaping the plugs at .035 instead of 50/60.
The coil may be jumping from what ya said.
The bad thing if it is missing then the 'tricity backs up in the opti and will cause carbon tracking and ruin the opti.

Re: underhood fireworks!!! does this mean they're arcing?
i've got NGK TR55's gapped @ .50, so should i just gap them @ .35-40. guess i'll but some good wires and double check all the ignition system then.
Re: underhood fireworks!!! does this mean they're arcing?
Re gap them to .035 and try the wires ya have.
The corona is somewhat normal and worse depending on weather and humidity. Ya can't get rid of it just diminish it 'cause it is a function of the 'tricity passing through the system
