Underdrive Pulleys.. Are They Worth It???

my friend threw on a under drive pulley and said he could feel a little difference. but i also read someware that there are dampers in the stock pulley that help get rid of some vibration.. i think it was on hondas but is it true for all cars?

anyone know if there's any other negative things about them? i don't have a sound system that requires extra power so i'm not worried about that issue.

thanks!

I put in an underdrive pulley on my car with the overdrive alternator pully and I love it! Definitely can feel the difference. Just don't let the car run for a while on idle then shut it off. The car needs to be in higher rpm's for the alternator to charge up the battery.
Definitely worth it!

the stock balencer is an integral part of the stock pulley. therefor most of the underdrive pullies available are designed to have the stock pulley/balancer piggy-back the new pulley. if you dont' you will cause problems.

typically it falls into the "every little bit helps" category. i don't think it was noticable when i installed mine...

according to ws6.com he got 0.7hp and 5.1# of torque, don't think that would be noticable, but i'll take it.

As mentioned, I hope your freind reinstalled the stock pulley/harmonic balacer on top of the underdrive pulled. I have heard of some people just running the underdrive pulley and leaving the balancer off, that is a very bad idea, it could cause major damage to the crank.

I like mine. At first it threw some codes but after resetting the PCM it ran fine. I think I gained 1 mph from it too. Not too sure thoug b/c it could have been the TB bypass with it and also the weather.

I am using the piggy-back style pulley too, and I like it. It's a BBK. I'm not using an alternator pulley, though. After I installed it, I seemed to notice a little more throttle response. It may be a problem for people that run big stereo systems, but the loss of charging efficiency never bothered me (I don't have any extra speakers or anything).
