Does it have any use on a car w/ just a hotcam kit and headers? would it be a good thing to have?

I got one because I like to know what my engine is doing.

It won't show the DTC's on an OBD11.

I think it is a great tool even on a stock LT1. It allows you to monitor almost anything on your car. It also is nice to have the ability to read codes at the push of a button of need be (for the OBDI guys).

Yeah, even if you have a little code or just something goes wrong at random it will tell you.

If for nothing else, it looks cool as hell in the vent and you can put the MPH setting on it and it is a lot easier to look at than your speedo.
