Angry Help~ SES light on!

Just started my car for the first time in a month, and right away the check engine light comes on. I let it run for a while, then shut the car off, and turned it back on hoping it would disappear. However, it didnt. What I did notice though was that the FANS came on INSTANTLY both times I started the car, even the first time when it was cold. It smelled burnt under the hood, but I wasnt sure where it was coming from. Also, the heater does not blow much air into the inside of the car AT ALL. Its almost non-existant.

Anyone have any ideas?!?! I cant get it scanned untill the snow goes away. Im just looking to see if anyone has had a similiar problem before!

Hey Cam,

Sorry to hear about the problem.

The fans going on right away indicate your car is going into limp mode... that's maybe why the heater is cold. Since the fans are going on full blast and not allowinf the car to heat up enough.

The burnt smell may just be because the car has been parked... dust and other particulates settles as the car sits for long periods and when the car gets hot... it burns it off.

If it's going into limp mode it is a specific type of failure... I don't have my book here to tell you what it is but someone else might... have you had any problems before? If not... it may have been some moisture build up on one of your connections or something. Where is your car parked anyways? Is there lots of humidity?

What I suggest you do is let the car run until it gets hot enough. Then turn it off and pull the PCM fuse for about 10 minutes.

Then put it back and start it up to see if it does it again. I'd say not to worry about it since you have a few months before you get the car on the road again anyways.

MSN me if you want... we haven't chatted in a while.

Check the fuse for the AIR pump. It is a likely candidate.

Very good idea... I forgot about that since it happened so long agg for me... this owuld be especially true if you haven't done the AIR recall which was done because of moisture buildup.

If you haven't done the recall, I suggest you do it so this doesn't happen again.

thanks guys.... I'll check that stuff out today. I have the car on my car trailer parked in my shed. No moisture really, but it did warm up a few days ago, maybe I got some moisture in stuff from that...

I'll check it out and see what the car is saying

Just checked the fuse for my air pump, and it was pretty much melted, so I replaced it. I pulled the fuse for the pcm and waited a bit, put it back in and started the car. It ran like total crap. It sounded like I had a lumpy cam! The car shook a bit, and basically just ran like a p.o.s. It ran better without AIR pump!

Would a dead AIR pump cause it to do this?

Any time you you remove power from the pcm, it erases the volatile memory. Until it relearns, your idle and performance may not be just as it was before. The longer you let it idle, the smoother it should become.

the thermostat controls the the temp of the engine the fans can run all day but until the engine reaches 190 degrees (stock stat) and the stat opens the water will not enter the engine to cool it down. once your car warms up to operating temp your heater should be blowing warm air.

the car warmed up fine, just took a bit longer, and the air coming out of the vents was warm, there was just barely any air moving through them.
