UGHH...car shutting off

Well my problem started a couple of weeks ago, my car would just shut off at
red light and today on the way to work it did twice once at a Light the second time when I was turning into a parking space. My SES light turns on and than goes away doing this at WOT.....also when I warm up my car there is times when the rpms raise to 2000 without me giving it some gas, when the car does shut off the check guages light is on. I was told by a mechanic that its my Granatelli MAF

Scanning the car for codes would be a good start seeing that your SES light turned on.

Sounds to me like your ignition switch may be on it's way out.

It's like a $17 or $27 part from the dealer, but a PITA to put in.

The only bad thing is that my ses light turns on for a little than goes away.
Can they still read a code even is the ses light is not on? Where is the ignition switch, might just change it tomorrow. Anyone else think thats its the ignition switch....

Sounds like you have a couple of issues. Your computer will store codes so they can be retrieved even if your SES is off.

If you decide to replace your ignition switch, Shoebox has a good write-up: http://shbox.com/ignsw/ign_switch_repl.html

It's a PITA to get to it is on the topside of the steering colum. You have to drop the steering wheel down and try to get your arm/hand up there.

I'd check to make sure your MAF sensor is functioning like it should. If thats not the issue my guess is you have a vacuum leak somewhere. My 96 formula did some of the same things you mentioned when it had a pretty bad vacuum leak . My car would rev up on its own at a stoplight and die out sometimes. Check your vacuum lines to make sure there isn't a leak!

Good Luck!
