U-Joint Q's
U-Joint Q's
I think I might have a bad U joint, it does a soft klunk when i go from a stop at any speed, very light.. definatly not the tranny mount as ive had that go before and the sound was quite different.
How hard is it to replace the U-Joint? How much should a U joint cost? Does anyone have a step by step to doing a U joint? Thanks for any help

You should probably check it before you change it. By rotating the tires back and forth in a jerking motion you might be able to tell if to much play.
As I recall, you just need to drop the shaft, put thejoint in a vice and using (2) rachet ends(1) to receive and (1 smaller one) to push the bearings out after removing the retainers.
Press new bearings in. Install the keepers and reinstall the shaft.
Important to make sure the bearing caps are taped on or somethings to ensure that the needle bearings don't fall out of the caps while messing with them. At least that's the way I used to do it back in the old days.

I had to use a torch to get the u-joints out of my driveshaft. They were injected with a plastic to seal them in. Heat the caps up and the plastic comes out like those black fireworks snakes. Then tap it right out
