Typical range of oil temperature
Typical range of oil temperature
I am going to put at least two gauges on my A-pillar (n2o and fuel pressure, both isolated/electric), and am going to be using AutoMeter's full-pillar (molded-in pods).
They actually offer a 3-pod pillar, that will fit three 2 1/16" gauges! So, I am considering getting it and using another gauge that would be helpful.
I've pretty much decided on oil temperature, since I hope to do some road racing someday.
ALL THIS SAID (and it was a lot, I know!)...
I am wondering what the typical range of oil temperature would be that I could expect under these circumstances. Autometer has the same style gauge as the others I'm getting, that covers 100-250*F. Would my engine ever safely run hotter than 250*F? I'm thinking not.
Would this be a good gauge then, for oil temperature?

I have the AutoMeter 250degF oil temp gauge, with the sensor in the pan, and I find that oil temp generally tracks pretty close to coolant temp. Under extended idling in traffic, or after a pass with a heavy hit of juice, the oil temp might run 20deg above coolant temp, but I've never got close to 250deg.
Hi Fred,
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking you might have had such a gauge.
Do you have a stock oil cooler? I'm wondering if the oil temp tracking with coolant temp is related to that or not. I have the stock option cooler.
Also, would you have an idea of how I could use this new gauge and sender to wire into my PCM for the existing tables referring to oil temperature? It'd be nice to be able to use those tables during racing, to affect fan enable points, etc.

I still have the stock oil cooler that came with my 94. I was goijng to mention that, but forgot.
I am not sure how you access the "oil temp" port on the PCM. I do have the corresponding Corvette wiring diagrams, so when I get home tonight I'll look and see if I can find where they hook the oil temp sensor up. All GM temp sensors seem to use the same thermistor, so you would have to see if the AutoMeter sensor is the same as far as resistance vs. temperature.
I've probably got most of the gauges you might want.....
