tuning causing backfire?
tuning causing backfire?
i was driving back to work today and just started to get on the gas and just heard a quick pop almost like a backfire but not very violent at all... it didnt really change the acceleration or rpm any.
my question is this: if this was a backfire(i was listening to music) would this be because of tunning(hpp with added 1 degree of timing advance on both tables) which is what someone else thinks, or would this be because of the stock plugs(i think) on 86k miles which is what i think.
and another thing, i havnt changed the plugs yet because my dad thinks i would brake one in the head(with my luck i would) so are the stock plugs easy to get out, and what would be the chances of my breaking them on my first time changing plugs....?????
thanks much!!

Re: tuning causing backfire?
Well, they are kind of a pain to reach, some are easier above some underneath. If you have a decent selection of basic tools, and are patient, it isn't too terrible. I could see it being the plugs; those are definitely in need of changing. If they are producing weak spark and are not completly burning the mixture, it could cause some unburned fuel to "pop" in the exhaust. I would replace the plugs and go from there; just be patient and if the plug doesn't want to go, try a different angle or something. Taking your time and doing it right is better than being hasty and breakin' off a plug in the head.
Re: tuning causing backfire?
the passenger front plug is the easyiest to change right..., so what i will try to do tomorrow is pull the plug and check how bad it is... i dont have all the papers
i need to be able to use my car all the time, and between highschool, and jobs i have no time at all to be able to change the plugs right now. so maybe in a few weeks...
thanks for help, ill just try stuff tomorrow after work...

Re: tuning causing backfire?
When you install the new plugs grab the wires AT the boot and not the wire. You will separate the inner wire or carbon and then they will need replacing(not a bad idea at this time). Gap your plugs at .035 NOT .045 or.050.The most common reason for a "pooomp" back through the intake is a valve holding open ie. to tight on the adjustment or NO2 gone wrong.
Re: tuning causing backfire?
well i was trying to pull the plug(drivers side, first plug from front) but i couldnt get any socket to fit over it...
the porcilin(sp) part of the plugs look nice and clean, does the boot do that for 85k miles, and the wires wernt cracked yet... so maybe the plugs arnt too bad, or maybe they were replaced a while ago with lower milaged plugs... or something like that...
thanks for tips!!!

Re: tuning causing backfire?
HAHA get this!
despite what my dad said about the possibility of breaking it inside the head i continue to try to take the driver #1 plug off to check gap, and after a few minutes of trying to find the right size(5/8)(not in toolbox) i find one that works...
and after mintues of trying to loosen the spark plug from top i hear shatter followed by porcilen(sp) falling to the ground. instantly i grab jack outa car and jack it up, go under and luckely i only brok the tip part... take plug out goto autozone and get stock plug to replace it. grap the right size socket and a gap tool. check the gap of the old plug and it comes to 0.56... wtf... after all this crap, i was even trembleing for a minute and it was all pointless... either way it works now and i will not be messing with the plugs any time soon...
thanks much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
