I was told by my mechanic that my plug wires are starting to look a bit shaky. I bought the car back in June of 2011. I bought it with about 139,000 miles on it, and now it has about 141,000 miles on it. The man I bought the car from told me that he was going to have the plugs and wires changed at 100,000 miles, but that his mechanic told him that they were both in good, working condition.

That being said, I was quoted for a tune-up that entails: plug+ wire change, optispark change, air filter+ fuel filter change, and tune. I was quoted $1100.

The car doesn't show any signs of being in dire need of a tune-up, but then again, I don't know what it should feel like with all new plugs+ wires, etc.

I had a new fuel filter installed during the car's inspection back in june. In november, I installed a K&N FIPK, so the air filter should be fine for a while.

My mechanic told me that labor on LT1 motors is brutal, so the majority of the price he quoted me is mostly for labor. He did however, tell me that the parts aren't too cheap either, for plugs and wires are about $200.

I would like to attempt to do the tune-up myself, especially since i just had a new water pump, rack+pinion, and my cat-back installed, totalling over $1000, not including my intake manifold getting resealed.

Could anyone please give me the process that I need to change my plugs and wires? Best way to access each plug? Easiest way to route the new wires to the opti? How to possibly replace the opti?

Any piece of information that you believe I would benefit from knowing, I would greatly appreciate. Thank you

 

if the opti isnt bad dont mess with it, thats the majority of your cost. As for the rest it can be done in the driveway the plugs are gonna be a pain but its not too bad. You can get good wires for 60-80.00, plugs 5-8.00 a peice, fuel filter-5.00, and kn cleaning kit is like 20.00. So doing it yourself without the opti your spending around 200.

 

If you have an mechanical ability, I would strongly recommend doing all the work yourself. You will pay a lot and most will do a bad incomplete job and charge you a ton. There are to many stories like they didn't replace the hardest plug or bought the cheapest opti and charged oem prices or just screwed things up. Not everyone does a bad job, but not many have experience with the LT1 and know how to work on them. They are a great motor from my experience, but a little tempermental.

 

Well the shop I go to specializes in muscle cars, ranging from antique to 2012 cars. I fully trust my shop, I just need to save money. Could someone give me their technique for changing the plugs+ wires?
