How long to replace spark plugs and wires?

Hey guys I'm trying to see what kind of project it is to replace the spark plugs and wires. Is there an average time? Maybe 4 hours? 5?

Thanks

Spark plugs/wires install

It took my mechanic 3hrs for the plugs and 4 for the wires(MSD8.5) and the factory looms for the wires were useless but then again i have the stk manifolds and a BORLA y pipe(2 3/4 dia.)which makes the job a lot tougher.

jeez i would have to say that took way to long for a mechanic. it only took me like 3hrs the first time to change plus and wires(msd 8.5) and i was only 16. Ive changed the plugs out twice since then about 45min then 30-35min the drivers side was easy as cake, the passenger side was another story though. I found it easier to do the install from the bottom just remove the ypipe. If you get stuck or have any questions make sure to hit us up and we'll help ya out.

How skinny are your arms? How many joints do you have on each arm?

It's a pain - but fully do-able. At a relaxed pace with obligatory breaks - took me about 4+ hours for each - done at different times. Remove the alternator - its a 10 minute job - that would have saved me big time.

Thumbs up

I recently did the Taylor OTVC wires and new NGK TR6's. Took about 4-5hours total. That included cutting the wires and such.

Come to find out the BRAND NEW Taylor wires are arcing against everything. So, I just bought a set of MSD 8.5mm Super Conductors and a new set of TR 6's since these are burnt from all the misfiring. Hoping since I recently did it that it will be fresh on the mind and I'll be able to cut the time in half. We'll see.

Get a SLP short socket. Made my own and it makes it a ton easier!

There is probably not a set time, it depends on the individual. I would set aside a day for it, it will take awhile to do.

Is it worth getting the SLP short socket? Can I find an equivalent somewhere (say Sears?)?

I haven't seen one for sale at Sears, but you could always buy a standard spark plug socket and cut it down.

The first time I did plugs it took about 3 hours, and the first time I did cut to fit wires was another 3 or so hours, but I can do mine in 40 minutes now including running and cutting new wires, but that's because there is nothing in the way anymore...

I think there are a few things people need to put in before posting their miracle plug change times

1. AC/Traction Control Etc. The AC tubes makes getting at some of the plugs a bit harder and generally just gets in the way. The traction control box on the valve cover isnt really in the way but prevents you from easily lying on top of the engine to get some much needed angles
2. Is it a vert or not. Verts have bracing down on the K member that I dont recall non verts as having. Its right in a spot where you'd want to slide your hands up for a couple of the plugs from below!
3. Dirty Motor. A dirty greasy motor is way harder to work on.
4. Plugs or Plugs & Wires? Takes a good bit more time to do plugs, and if you have AC you have an AC compressor in the way too!
5. Are you thin and scrawny? It sure helps! I had to have the girlfriend reach at a few plugs for me because my hands were too big and im NOT a big guy to begin with
6. Tools also make a huge difference. If your not able to get the right angle with the socket you have you can EASILY spend an hour trying to get at something if its your first crack at it .

Anyways, if you have headers its generally easy as cake (15 minutes) to change plugs. For stock manifolds see above 8) I don't know how much harder a dual cats 96 setup is for plug changes than the 95 and older single cat setup...

Did you count the time it took you too pull the starter, or were you actually able to get the #7 from the bottom without removing the starter?

How small are your arms?

Hi there

I have a set of spark plug sockets that have a notch cut out of one of the sides, they are for headers, but are great for these cars. The slot allows you to slip the socket over the spark plug at a angle instead of straight on. They are also cut down so they are short in length.
I then use a flex head ratcheting ratchet and it makes life soooooo much better. Let me know if you would like
to know about these.
