Tune before shorties?

Im tryiny to decide if i should get some shorties or a tune first. The only reason im debating this is bc on the tune order sheet it asks if and what kind of headers ive got i know from installing lts in the past that headers usually need mounts plug wires etc which will cost money i dont have i guess im just wonderin if i should put stock manifolds on the order sheet or shorties and if it will even makke a difference btw my car is lowered why im gettin shorties

Personally I wouldn't and haven't gone with shorties and my car is lowered. Shorties don't really gain much and are extremely difficult to route wires right and change plugs. I recently upgraded my JBA mids for RK sport mids (ASM copy) and love them. They make great power, plug access is ok (not as good as long tubes) and you don't have to worry about ground clearance.

Mids are the way to go IMO if you don't wanna go LT's.

Here are some suggestions:

1) JBA's ( I have a set and y pipe if ur interested)
2) PaceSetter
3) RK's or ASM (the same but you probably won't find the ASM's)

All of the above make excellent power and the only difference is the RKs/ASM's are larger primaries 1 3/4 vs 1 5/8 of the others and with my heads they flow better. For a stock motor it won't make much of a difference.

For the tune, it won't hurt to go ahead and get it done for headers before you install them if you want to go that route.

I used shorty headers because I have to stay smog legal. IMO it was worth it, and I have much better access to the plugs/wires than with stock manifolds. They get put down a lot, but are still better than stock manifolds. I used BBK, but there are better ones. I had to "fix" them to use them.

Mids are smog legal as well including CA, as long as the cats or cats (depending upon year) are retained in the same location and you can pass visual with the air fittings and egr tube.

Re: Tune before shorties?

In CA, they have to be on the CARB approved aftermarket equipment list, and have the CARB-EO exemption number on a tag welded to the headers. Not al manufacturers go to the trouble of having their headers certified. There is an online list of approved components, but its very hard to actually locate anything on the list.

Other states (e.g. - NJ) use the CARB list as well.

Yup, my JBA's used to have the carb tag, but it fell off over the years.
