tty head bolts

Are my head bolts tty for a 95? Didn't know if they could be reused, they don't have many miles on them but if they are tty I will get new ones.

Re: tty head bolts

You will get mixed reviews on this. Most say not to reuse, some say it's ok. I ended up picking up a set of lightly used ARP's for a great price and went with those, as they CAN be reused.

Re: tty head bolts

They're not TTY but it's also not a good idea to reuse stock head bolts.

Re: tty head bolts

It depends on whether they look like the old style bolts or not. Some people have reported TTY bolts on late 95s. IMHO, either way, I would replace them with some ARP bolts.

They are bolts I bought at auto zone like a year ago, but my car hasn't ran in about six months. How can I tell if they look like the factory style.

Any part numbers on the arp bolts?

Re: tty head bolts

I've always used ARP 134-3601.

Re: tty head bolts

ARP part # 134-3601 seems to be correct

So what I need to find out is if mine are like factory or if they can be reused. If I have to get new then I will but I don't want to"waste"money if I don't have to.

Re: tty head bolts

Well, if you bought bolts and they are not the stock ones, I guess they could be anything (maybe you should back-check the part number). Most stock TTY bolts have an integrated flange under the head and are a light color. The older stock bolts don't have the flange, but an aftermarket bolt could have either (ARPs have the flange).

If the bolts you bought were TTY and you used them, you cannot use them again.

I know the short bolts are lighter in color. I will buy new ones to be sure.

Thanks for the replies.

The TTY head bolts have a flange head like was said, the regular head bolts have a plain hex head with a captured washer. The regular head bolts can be reused many times as long as they're not over-torqued.

Take a picture of what you have and post it up.

Re: tty head bolts

i want to say that 95 or 96 is when they went tty. i used to know for sure but forgot. When i was changing my head gaskets last year I couldnt get solid information as to whether my car had reusable or tty bolts so i went ahead with some ARPs. soon after i found reliable info that my 94s bolts were reusable and soon after that was working on a head gasket job in a 89 chevy 1500 with a remanufactured 350. We didnt know what kinda bolts were in it so i dug out my formulas original bolts and they all torqued down just perfectly. If youve ever tried torquing a tty head bolt to 65 ftlbs youll find that usually it never tightens it just stretches
