True duals with 2 cats??

I've been reading a ton of posts about true duals and get a lot of conflicting info, some saying you can't put true duals on the LT1 cars due to space and others that have but is not clear if they are running cat convertors or not, and not finding any pics.

Anyone done a true dual setup with 2 cats on a LT1 TA?
And does anyone have some good pics showing how it was done and placement of everything?
Anyone make a kit for the F-bods that has it all?

Planning on attempting this using some LT headers on the '95 TA.

Go to ls1tech.com and look in there external engine page. There underbody is the same as ours. Nice cars. Where's the 15th and 25th anniversary cars?

Re: True duals with 2 cats??

yea, on the LS1 cars, the driver side cat is connected right up on the manifolds almost, which I would not be able to do with long tube headers and was wondering where an alternative location may be where it doesn't hit.
No more room for any more cars in the corral or I'd get a 1st gen TA You've got quite the collection yourself.

Ok, thats some pics to help me out. None of those have cats on them, but I assume I could put some low-profile ones on there somewhere before the "X" meets since they have just ran the piping under everything as opposed to the original routing over the trans brackets and stuff where the original pipe gets flattened out.

Any clearance problems with these for a daily driver since the pipes are placed below the cross-members??

Re: True duals with 2 cats??

My setup can run either 3" CarSound cats, or replace them with 3" Borla XR-1 shorties for running leaded fuel at the track. The picture shows the Borlas, but it looks the same with the CarSounds.

The problem is that there's no dent for the cat in the floor on the passenger side cat/muffler, but with the car at stock ride height, its not a problem with ground clearance. When the car was dropped 1.8", the cat dragged on everything.

The car actually may be just a bit higher than the stock ride height when I change from 16" to 17" rims. Now that I have some ideas, I'll look closer at it next time I have it up in the air. I've even found some pics of the pipes going over the rear axle, I'd like to get the pipes exiting the rear with the stock tips if possible.

Changing from 16" rims to 17" rims will not raise the car up.... you have to use the same outside diameter tires with either rim size.... e.g. 245/50-16 have the same outside diameter as 275/40-17 or 315/35-17.

Re: True duals with 2 cats??

I have cats on my duals. Not my idea, I was out to sea and came home to it done. Present from the wife. Don't really have any more clearance issues than anybody with lontubes has.
I don't have any pics for you, but I can tell you that I'll be gutting both of those things as soon as I get a chance. Duals are supposed to be a hell of a lot louder than mine are.

Re: True duals with 2 cats??

I think im going to have to buy two cheap cats just to have my duals ran. Right now I just have Lt's with 18x3inch chambered tubes stuck on them. No turn downs or anything. They smack the floor board everytime I get on it, and have some weird rattling noise that I cant figure out for the life of me. No one around here will touch a car with out cats on it. No one around here can bend three inch pipe either. I'm going to have to sell my mufflers, buy new ones, and two cats, just to run true duals out the back, under the axle with tips on it. I'm not for sure where everything is going to go, but I will get pics to you as soon as its done.

I'll be darn, appearence sure is deciving, the 17" wheels on my 30th TA look so much bigger, but the measuring tape proved otherwise.

I found this link with pics of exactly the true dual set up I would like to make. Only thing is its with 2.5" which I think should be plently if I end up 'X' piping it where the pipes come together anyway. This has 2 cats and goes over the rear axle.
I'm thinking some low profile billet style cats would even fit better and some 3" twister mufflers right before they exit thru the rear stock tips so I don't have that cluster of piping after the axle.

Also, I wonder if there's some after market sway bars/control arms that would provide a little more room going over the axle as the stock control arm there is a stamped steel piece, I think a solid rod would be much more space efficient...see what I find there..

Re: True duals with 2 cats??

Glad you found the pics. System is 2.5" mandrel bent thorughout. Pipes run
in the stock location and over the axle. The crossover is in the parallel run
of pipe. I did not want an "x" because of fitment issues.

Re: True duals with 2 cats??

Yes, thanks for having those pics truedualsws6. Thanks for that link My Iroc, that is exactly what I'm looking for in my other post. I could spend a ton real quick on that site. I bet the torque arm and the arm relocation kit would add some space as well getting rid of those stamped steel pieces too. Part# MPHR002 and TCC012.
Invaluable information, THANKS!
And more pics would be greatly appreciated.

Re: True duals with 2 cats??

I just had my true-dual exhaust installed Friday. I don't know if the link below would work or not. If it doesn't, I can email them to someone who might be willing to host it for me. I will be taking more pics of mt car later. I just bought the camera, and I still suck at taking better pics. The only thing I goofed on, was the tips. I ordered those from Summit, and they turned out to be smaller than the Borla Exhaust I've had. I'm going to order some stainless steel Z28 tips, like the ones my car came with stock, or something else that doesn't look as wimpy!
-Goose

PS: If you notice, you can put some bullet style cats, like the Vettes have right after the headers. The mufflers I've got are the Sweet Thunder 18" Chambered Mufflers.
