True Dual w/SLP muffler

I was thinking of putting True Dual Long Tubes in replace of the Y-pipe on my 95 Trans Am. I'm also throwing on an SLP muffler. Is it worth getting true dual exhaust?? Do i need to spend $70 to get a SLP muffler instead of a Hooker?? Any other helpers or suggestions on good things to do to an LT1 engine I'm just starting out so thanks for all your help!

Do you understand what 'true duals' are? You're going to want 2 one in-one out mufflers and, if you want, some sort of exhaust scavenging (x or h pipe)

I think he's talking about dual exits???? Not sure though............

Re: True Dual w/SLP muffler

Food for thought...Forgive me if Im stating the obvious but it is proven that a single 3" pipe flows more exhaust than 2 pipes of 2-1/4" diameter. So, if you installed true duals of 2-1/2" you would equal the single 3" pipe that SLP installs as an option. The reason is the cylinders fire one after the other rather than all at once so the columns of exhaust gas are either flowing down a 2-1/2" pipe one after the other or a 3" pipe regardless of duals or the single set up. As for sound, couldnt tell you if it sounds much better than my factory SLP dual outlet on the left side or not but I sure like it, could use headers though.

Then why do dyno's and track times prove otherwise?

Re: True Dual w/SLP muffler

If you look at the dyno sheets it will clearly show that true dual exhaust systems create much more horsepower up high and less torque down low. This would explain the varying track times.

Re: True Dual w/SLP muffler

Less torque down low with duals? Well, since I drive my car on the street rather than the track, Ill stick with the 3" system. Running true duals seems like a waste of time and energy if you will only make more power by revving the snot out of the engine given my LT1 probably wont like seeing much more than 6K. I figure the engineers at GM have a better idea of what works than we do. Dont the C5's run a single pipe up the center?

By down low , we mean 3000 rpm and below, when youre getting on it how often is it below 3000? I know with my car I touch the gas and 3000 RPM is long gone.

Knock yourself out, go through the trouble to put on a "true" dual exhaust for no gain, its straight forward science. For all the b.s. involved why not put a mufflex 4" single system on? Just like everything else has advanced through technology so has exhaust. Dual exhaust isnt the be all and end all anymore. Have a nice day.

Re: True Dual w/SLP muffler

Theres a big difference between a dual exhaust and a dual exhaust with an "X" in it.

I apologizing for basing my opinion on actual evidence through research and being an engineering major myself. Shoot me.

Re: True Dual w/SLP muffler

Most people that flow dual vs single pipe flow simply the pipe and not the whole system, they also flow cool or warm air and not heated exhaust, along with the engine pulsing through it all.

Don't just go by what you read on here. Look for the actual track times and dyno numbers. You'll see why a lot of people have gone with true duals over resrictive catbacks.

Re: True Dual w/SLP muffler

Flow isnt the only thing that allows an exhaust system to free up power, and dual 2.5" pipes have the same cross sectional area, a little more actually, than a 3.5 inch pipe so should flow nearly the same and quite a bit better, 38% larger anyways, than a single 3". Search for a post by Maxracesoftware I think it was who did a side by side comparison of the Y pipe and duals. I also dont understand why anyone is saying that a Y pipe would make more low end torque than a dual setup.
