trick to launching w/converter?

I just installed my 3200-3400 stall vigilante converter and am running stock radials with 3:73's. whats the trick getting of the line? Is there a way I can launch with these tires and keep some traction? power brake?

with what you have i'd just power brake it...they do have some sort of mechanism that allows you to sit in 'suspended grace', rev your engine and flick a switch to 'get er done'...don't recall what its called though...

Yeah I was wondering about something of this nature. When you have the higher stall do you have to rev up like a manual would, or do you just hit the gas and the car automatically launches at the higher RPM?

and one more question ... does the torque converter just slam into take off or does it ease into it just at a higher rpm?

if you just hit the gas, theres gonna be a slight hesitation between the 800 rpm and ~3200 rpm range...a line lock may fix this...

Are u talking about a trans brake or a line lock?

A Torque Converter varies in take by how hard u accelerate and whether or not u reach the "stall speed". When u hit the stall, the TC locks and that is how u get the power to the ground. If u just hit the gas, ur letting the converter lock itself when it hits the right RPM. If u brake torque, ur flashing the stall so that u can ease it into a take off.

Its really hard to get the power to the ground with a high stall, stock suspension, and street tires.

The best 60' I could ever manage was a 2.1 on Kumho Ecsta 712's with stock suspension. All I could do was brake stall to 3000 then flutter the throttle on take of until I felt it hook then mash it to the floor. I couldnt go WOT till around 40mph at the track or I would just blaze the rear tires.

The best way to get the power to the ground would be to do a little suspension work, and get some ET streets, or BFG Drag Radials. The BFG's didnt work for my car at all, I could do a good burnout and still light then up till 40mph.

A line lock would help you out off the line. Go to www.tbyrnemotorsports.com and then search for the Hurst Roll control. That is a line lock in order to lock up the brakes with a switch and help you rev the car up higher and release the switch when the light goes. That may help.

I think you guys are missing the question. He's asking how to get traction with street tires with a TC and gears.

THe anwser. VERY VERY carefully. Lower your tire pressure in the rear and just practive. You wont be able to go WOT so you gotta find the launch limit that your tires will still hold.

It's really hard to cut a good 60' on a street tire. Yea you can try to lower the pressure in the tires, but if you are looking to cut some times below 2.0, then a drag radial is the way to go.

Launch off idle and mash the gas and then pedal the gas to keep it from spinning.
You want to "flash" the converter to get nice launch but if you keep your foot to the floor you will just spin.

this is my traction situation exactly. see sig, i spin past the 330' mark at the track, (45mph rolling burnouts dont make the car fast)
i think the answer would be et streets and pray for your rearend...thats what ill be doing.

Line Lock is for burnouts

Trans Brake is for launches

Exactly. What will a line lock do that holding down the damn brake pedal won't?! Line lock is a waste of money if all you need is help on launches. Line locks are for burnouts.

I'd hate to say it, but with that converter and street tires, you'll never have traction. Spend the $150 on a used set of drag radials; you won't be happy until you do. My avatar is a pic of my car with drag radials and the stock converter, so imagine what yours would be like with traction!
