Transmission trouble

After my car sits for over two or three hours the transmission acts wierd. It seems like it starts in second gear instead of first. Is this possible??? When I press the gas it moves slowly but then catches all of the sudden, just like it shifted down to first. It drives perfect if it hasn't been sitting for very long. I've had the fluid and filter changed, but it didn't help any. Is there anything short of a rebuild that might solve my problem??

The trans shop should be able to help you diagnos that one. Dont go to a dealer cause they'll say you need a new trans.

Just wondering how many miles you had on the car when you had it serviced because one of my freinds dads that used to drag race in the 70's always told me that he would never change the trans fluid after 65,000 miles on a daily driver. He said its funny how you get it serviced at 80,000 miles, suddenly it has problems. It held true in my 88' caprice, other than that i'm not sure i agree with him, but he has had more miles on his cars and no trans trouble.

It could be something as minor as a shift solenoid. Have a local trans. shop do a diagnostic scan on it. Have you had any check engine lights? Some shops do diag. scans for free. If their scanner has data capabilities, it will tell you if the solenoid is being commanded by the computer at the right time.

No, I haven't had any check engine lights. How hard would it be to replace the soleniod myself? And how much $$? I'm not sure if I could find a shop around here that would have the diagnostic tools.

The solenoid itself is easy to change. It's just a simple clip that you can use a pocket screwdriver to remove, and then a wiring clip. Of course you've got to drop the pan to get to the solenoid. I still wouldn't suggest changing anything until you get it diagnosed correctly.
