Tranny removal
Tranny removal
I have to change my rear main so I was wondering if any of you guys have a site that I can go to that shows a step by step sequence of how to accomplish this. I have access to a lift so that will definately make for an easier time. Thanks guys.
Re: Tranny removal
As I said the hobby shop where i will be performing the work has a lift and they also have a tranny jack plus everything else that I will need. I still need a website with detailed instructions if possible. Thanks
Re: Tranny removal
I just put my tranny back in from doing an engine rebuild so I can give you a rough idea.
1) You'll need to remove the torque arm and drive shaft from the back of the trans. I find it easier to remove the torque arm first and then the driveshaft. I recommend that you support the rearend with something because once the torque arm is unbolted the rear will want to twist.
2) Next you will need to detach the shifter cable from the trans. This (I believe) snaps to the lever on the side of the trans and then there are two bolts along the pan. You can just move the cable off to the side.
At this point you will have the coolant lines, wires, the crossmember and the bolts along the back of the engine. I'd recommend (since you will have a lift) to remove the crossmember at this point, with the tranny jack underneath, and lower the trans slightly to give better access to the remaining items.
3)Once the trans is lowered slightly you can easily access the wiring brackets (two on top of the trans). You can then unplug the two connections and then pull the wire toward the front of the trans.
4)Next remove the ONE bolt holding the dipstick in place and pull it out to give easier access to the coolant lines. Once this is out of the way you can then loosen up the two lines that go to the trans and get those out of the way.
5) The final steps are to take the dust shield off which will allow you to unbolt the converter from the flywheel. Once this is done you can CAREFULLY unbolt the trans from the engine and with proper support lower it down. The top bolts will be a PIA but a swivel should make it doable.
