Tranny "pops" out in reverse?

Just wanted to know what would be causing my Z to pop out of reverse when I try and back up? The car is a M6 with 4:10's. I have no trouble whatsoever going into reverse and when I let the clutch out it instantly pops out of gear. If I hold it in reverse most of the time it is OK but once in a blue moon it will still pop out on me??? What could it be? Thanks

mine poped ot of reverse it was the reverse syncro you have to pull the tranny tare it apart and flip the syncro over easy 6 - 8 hour job.

There is a key retainer in the reverse syncronizer assembly that will either break or come unaligned from the detent keys and that is why your car pops out of gear. You will probably need a new slider assembly.

$150 for the slider, repair can be done yourself.

besides dropping the tranny, how long would changing it out take. Is the part easily accessable once the trans. is down?

For me it would take 5-10 minutes with the tranny out but I have take the reverse section out so many times it might be different for somone else. You will need a pair of lock ring pliers, and a 15mm socket wrench and possibly a gear puller for the speedometer gear, but it should come out with a rubber mallet.

syncro

with mine the teeth in the syncro were just a ground down a bit. i'm guessing that the previous owner thought it was a 7 speed and bypased the reverse lockout while moving forward.

if you have pulled the tranny before it shouldnt take long the biggest part of the job is taking the tranny out and putting it back in. with help I can pull and remove a tranny in about a hour. it tool me about 3-4 hours by my self the first time. the reverse syncro isnt that far in the tranny and is fairly easy to change. if you dont understand the working's of a manual tranny any shop could pull the syncro and change or flip it in about 20 min.

i had similar problems with my toyota truck, it would go out of 2nd gear... and damn it threw it hard...

the mechanic put in a new clutch and the problems dissapeared... so if ur gonna replace ur clutch anytime soon try that first... then u can go in and fix ur tranny... my mechanic said i had broken a fork or something like that... but whatever u still gotta tear it apart
